According to the coroner\u2019s office, my Uncle Rick\u2019s suicide was the most meticulously planned they\u2019d seen for years. I think Rick would be proud of that.<\/p>\n

He was two months into his 86th year when his body was discovered on May 2 earlier this year. It was his neighbour, Colin, who found him, after being summoned by Rick\u2019s cleaner, who had arrived to find the house too quiet for comfort. He suspected something was afoot.<\/p>\n

It was, of course.<\/p>\n

Colin found Uncle Rick dead in bed with no doubt as to the cause: His bedside table was littered with an array of pharmaceutical bottles, empty of the drugs that he\u2019d squirrelled away over years for the very purpose of killing himself.<\/p>\n

Beside them was a plan copied from a website detailing what he should take and when; a Do Not Resuscitate wristband; a Do Not Resuscitate document; his living will and a bottle of Baileys.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the floor, beside the bed, lay a bottle of cheap whisky which Mark, his elder son, assumes he had bought especially for the purpose because, as with all things comestible, Uncle Rick preferred the good stuff.<\/p>\n

Still attached was the security tag, on which he\u2019d scribbled: \u201cI didn\u2019t steal it, honest!\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, when I\u2019d got over the shock of his death, I too felt a strange sense of pride in Rick\u2019s diligence. Of course, I ought not to have been shocked. It was hardly a secret to us in his family that Uncle Rick wanted to die. He would tell anyone who\u2019d listen that his life was becoming intolerable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When he was in a particularly bad mood, the effort required to head him off at the conversational \u201cI\u2019m-no-use-to-anybody-I-ought-to-be-allowed-to-die\u201d pass, could be wearing. After all, we\u2019d heard it on repeat for the best part of seven years, ever since his beloved wife, my aunty Christine, died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
