Tommy Tuberville (R), who was trying to force a vote on the same nominee. <\/p>\n<p>Schumer also filed cloture motions to force votes on Biden\u2019s nominees to serve as chief of naval operations and Air Force chief of staff \u2014Lisa Franchetti and David Allvin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Earlier on Tuesday, Tuberville secured the 16 signatures he needed to advance the nomination of Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney to serve as assistant commandant. <\/p>\n<p>The move would have taken control of the floor away from Schumer, albeit momentarily, and would have forced Democrats to vote on one of the nominees that Tuberville has held up to protest the Pentagon\u2019s abortion policy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville won\u2019t extend Schumer and other Democratic colleagues the courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roving Biden\u2019s military promotions by unanimous consent and instead has insisted on voting on them individually. He\u2019s making the process inconvenient as possible to put pressure on the Pentagon to end its policy of providing leave and reimbursing the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> expenses of service members who cross state lines to obtain abortions. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville on Tuesday even went so far as to lament the impact on military families caused by the holds he\u2019s placed on military promotions. But he argued that he\u2019s not to blame, pointing the finger instead at the Pentagon\u2019s abortion policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m all for the military,\u201d Tuberville told \u201cThe Ingraham Angle\u201d on Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>. \u201cAnd we\u2019re in a tough time right now because our military\u2019s struggling to actually put a group together, whether it\u2019s Army, Navy, Air Force.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He made his comments in response to criticism from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who urged Tuberville on Tuesday afternoon to drop his holds. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure you remember that I said this a bad idea quite a while ago. I still think it\u2019s a bad idea, particularly applied to people who don\u2019t make policy. So, I have been among those trying to convince Sen. Tuberville to express his opposition some other way,\u201d McConnell said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuberville pushed back on that critique. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t work for Sen. McConnell. You know, I like him fine. I work for the people of Alabama and taxpayers of this country. I thought we\u2019re pro-life. I am,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Senate Democrats have resisted scheduling votes on non-political military nominees, arguing that voting on more than 300 nominees will eat up too much floor time and set a bad precedent. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats argue that non-political military nominees should not become political pawns and claim that forcing senators to vote on them will inject politics into the process for considering military promotions. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Schumer didn\u2019t want to let Tuberville force the floor action by collecting the requisite number of signatures on a cloture petition. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Marine Corps. Commandant Eric Smith suffered a heart attack earlier this week, and the procedural battle Tuesday night centered on the nomination to succeed him. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schumer slammed Tuberville for not letting Smith\u2019s replacement advance without a vote. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis scary incident involving Gen. Smith shows why it\u2019s supremely risky to play politics with military appointments as Sen. Tuberville is doing,\u201d he said. \u201cEmergencies appen, and when they do the chain of command must be able to respond. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBut thanks to Sen. Tuberville, there is no No. 2 at the Marine Corps to fill in.
