This could pose a threat to water quality but also presents an opportunity \u2014 using heat pumps to extract the energy and use it to heat homes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Berlin alone, enough energy is transferred to the groundwater to supply 14,660 households with heat, based on modelling from over 5,000 underground car parks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis would have the advantage of extracting energy from the groundwater and thus cooling it down and improving its quality,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximilian Noethen, a geoscientist from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers didn\u2019t just look at Berlin to come to their conclusions, but 31 underground car parks in various cities throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groundwater temperatures in European cities have been rising for decades as a result of global warming, which could affect the quality of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groundwater<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from which we draw large parts of our drinking water. \u201cThis development needs to be controlled through a variety of measures,\u201d cautions Professor Peter Bayer from the Institute of Geo<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s and Geography at MLU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the heat from groundwater alone is not enough to cover the heating needs of a city like Berlin, the researchers believe that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential for geothermal energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes well beyond this and that it could make a significant contribution to supplying sustainable heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere in Europe, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Croatia is building a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16MW geothermal plant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> boosted by \u20ac30mn in funding, while Hungary <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ceenergynews.com\/geothermal\/hungary-bets-on-geothermal-energy-to-ensure-energy-security\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 1-1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas with geothermal energy per year.
