\n Microsoft has released a tool designed to automatically identify deepfake videos.<\/p>\n

The tool, dubbed Microsoft Video Authenticator, is rolling out ahead of the US presidential election and is meant to help stop the spread of digitally altered videos.<\/p>\n

Video Authenticator will be able to \u201canalyze a still photo or video\u201d and give it a \u201cconfidence store\u201d which provides the percentage chance that it has been artificially manipulated, Microsoft said in a blog post.<\/p>\n

When it is analyzing a video, the tool \u201ccan provide this percentage in real-time on each frame as the video plays,\u201d which will allow it to identify exactly which parts of a clip have been manipulated.<\/p>\n

Microsoft said that it works by \u201cdetecting the blending bondary of the deepfake and subtle fading or greyscale elements that might not be detectable by the human eye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctored videos involving politicians have gone viral in recent weeks. Last month, a video of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi designed to make her app<\/a>ear drunk was viewed more than 2 million times on Facebook<\/a> before the social network was able to flag it.<\/p>\n

Microsoft said that the tech will be made available to \u201corganizations involved in the democratic process, including news<\/a> outlets and political campaigns.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company is also rolling out tech which will help identify manipulated content, such as news stories. That tool will allow content producers to add digital identifiers to their work, which can be identified by a browser extension that readers can install.<\/p>\n

The identifiers will let people know \u201cwith a high degree of accuracy that the content is authentic and that it hasn\u2019t been changed.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
