\n The candy-colored look of Barbie <\/em>delivered colorist of Yvan Lucas of Company 3 the Filmlight Color Award for a theatrical feature.<\/p>\n

\n The third annual awards \u2014 organized by FilmLight, the maker of the Baselight color grading system, in collaboration with Camerimage \u2014 were presented Sunday at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival in Toru\u0144, Poland.\u00a0From roughly 400 entries, honorees were selected by a jury chaired by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker<\/em>, Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/em>), who presented the awards.<\/p>\n

\n Of his award-winning work on Barbie<\/em>, which was directed by Greta Greig and lensed by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, Lucas tells The Hollywood Reporter,<\/em> \u201cRodrigo Prieto and I both like to work together on the overall look of a film before production starts. Creating LUTs (Look Up Tables) that define the way color and contrast will be affected helps Rodrigo, the director and the department heads all work towards a common goal.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cFor the majority of Barbie<\/em>, meaning all scenes set in Barbie Land, we created a LUT that combined an overall film emulation, a three-strip<\/a> Technicolor look and specific ways of interpreting hues such as red, pink and blue in a way that pushes them into the palette everyone now recognizes from the film,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

\n Additional winners included Dirk Meier at D-Facto Motion for The Pimp:\u00a0No F***ing\u00a0Fairytale (Luden) <\/em>season one <\/em>(cinematographer Oskar Dahlsbakken), which topped the TV series<\/a>\/episodic category; Tim Masick at Company 3\u00a0for Zara Man, <\/em>\u2018SS23\u2019 <\/em>(cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd), in the commercial category; \u00ad\u00adfreelance colorist Marina Starke for Mayyas \u2018Horra\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(cinematography by Shadi Chaaban), which topped the music video category; and freelance colorist Cem Ozkilicci for Possession <\/em>(cinematographer Oskar Dahlsbakken), in the Spotlight category for low-budget features.<\/p>\n

\n Accepting her award, Starke, who had two additional noms, received app<\/a>lause when she said she hoped to encourage more diversity in her field. Meier urged more colorists to attend Camerimage and \u201cstrengthen the collaboration between cinematographers and colorists even more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cRepresenting our fantastic jury, I\u2019d love to congratulate the winners of this year\u2019s FilmLight Color Awards,\u201d Sher said. \u201cThese diversely talented artists \u2013 and the inspiring work they helped craft \u2013 are a testament to the critical importance of the colorist in the art of filmmaking. It\u2019s great to see these artists come from across the globe \u2013 proving that good work isn\u2019t limited to huge budgets or big shops, but available to everyone with a good eye and refined skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The American Society of Cinematographers and the British Society of Cinematographers are among the organizations that support the Color Awards. \u201cColorists are great collaborators \u2026 Our closest relationship is with our colorist,\u201d said cinematographer Stephen Lighthill, a member of the jury who is also the past president of the ASC. \u201cWe are happy at the ASC to continue to contribute to this event.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
