Wolfe<\/strong> is one of the great storytellers of the stage and screen, which is why it was only fitting that the writer and director of theatrical and film productions was at last month\u2019s SCAD Savannah Film Festival to collect its Storyteller Award. Following a screening of his latest motion picture, <em>Rustin<\/em> \u2014\u00a0which tells the story of <strong>Bayard Rustin<\/strong>, the gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and is now streaming on Netflix \u2014\u00a0Wolfe joined yours truly in the Lucas Theatre to record an episode of <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s <em>Awards Chatter<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"pmc-protected-embed-2\" class=\"pmc-protected-embed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=PMC8326017021\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Wolfe, 69, is known as a playwright for writing 1986\u2019s <em>The Colored Museum<\/em> and co-writing 1992\u2019s <em>Jelly\u2019s Last Jam<\/em>. He also gained recognition as a theater director for the original Broadway productions of <em>Angels in America: Millennium <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>roaches<\/em> and <em>Angels in America: Perestroika<\/em> and a host of Broadway musicals, like 1996\u2019s <em>Bring in \u2019da Noise, Bring in \u2019da Funk<\/em>, 2004\u2019s <em>Caroline, or Change<\/em> and 2016\u2019s <em>Shuffle Along<\/em>. His film directing credits include 2005\u2019s <em>Lackawanna Blues<\/em>, 2008\u2019s <em>Nights in Rodanthe<\/em>, 2017\u2019s <em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/em> and 2020\u2019s <em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He has been nominated 15 times for a Tony Award, winning three times, for best direction of a play for <em>Angels in America: Millennium Approaches<\/em> in 1993, best direction of a musical for <em>Bring in \u2019da Noise, Bring in \u2019da Funk<\/em> in 1996 and best special theatrical event for <em>Elaine Stritch at Liberty<\/em> in 2002. He was nominated for an Emmy, best directing for a limited <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, for <em>Lackawanna Blues<\/em> in 2005. He has also been nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award for outstanding directing of a miniseries or TV film twice, once for <em>Lackawanna Blues<\/em> in 2006 \u2014 which resulted in a win \u2014 and for <em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/em> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2019s <strong>Ben Brantley<\/strong> described him as \u201ca brilliant stage director \u2014\u00a0arguably the best now working in the American theater.\u201d The <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> declared, \u201cThere are few living talents who could be viewed as much of a New York theater institution.\u201d <em>Interview<\/em> magazine said, \u201cIt would be difficult to overstate his status on Broadway.\u201d <strong>Tony Kushner<\/strong> proclaimed that he is \u201cthe premier theater artist of my generation,\u201d and those are just the quotes about his work in theater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    During this episode, Wolfe discusses growing up during segregation; discovering his passion for theater; helming the landmark Broadway production of <em>Angels in America<\/em>; transitioning from theater to film directing; working with the late <strong>Chadwick Boseman<\/strong> on <em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>; why it was so important to him to tell the story of Bayard Rustin; plus much more!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
