I arrive at this enclave of Miami\u2019s wealthiest just before sundown, in a black van with tinted windows. After we park out front next to a green Porsche, I\u2019m led to a sprawling backyard. A small congregation of managers and publicists whispers by the grill, beyond a giant blue pool. Taking all of this in, I\u2019m suddenly in front of the master of the house. He\u2019s dressed low-key \u2014 a black baseball cap on backwards, an oversize T-shirt, expensive-looking blue sneakers, and jeans \u2014 save for his wrists: a diamond chain bracelet sits on his right, a gold ruby-encrusted Rolex on the left. I say his house is lovely. Ozuna gives me a hug and replies, \u201cThis is your house too.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            His placid disposition is a sharp contrast with the odyssey of getting here \u2014 at least four changes of time or location, resulting in a chase around Miami. \u201cEverything with [his team] is very on the go haha,\u201d his rep texts me earlier that day. By the time we\u2019re face-to-face, sitting beside the pool, I tell Ozuna that I\u2019m exhausted from trekking around Miami all day. I play with his dog, Falco, a large but docile Belgian Malinois. Ozuna takes his espresso with a bit of oat or almond milk. His publicist drinks it black, but he insists she try one of the alternatives, playfully teasing her: \u201cYou don\u2019t know if you\u2019ll like it if you don\u2019t try it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            This would seem to be Ozuna\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to music as of late, though it\u2019s certainly not how he operated in the past. He debuted in 2012, breaking through with the club reggaeton track  <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rAb13TXc6mQ\">\u201cSi Tu Marido No Te Quiere\u201d<\/a> and a number of guest features. Early co-signs from pioneering reggaeton duos <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ne-9-7hpbRw\">Zion y Lennox<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2rtWJpvElkQ\">Wisin y Yandel<\/a> and appearances on high-charting tracks, such as the inescapable 2018 posse cut <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9jI-z9QN6g8\">\u201cTe Bot\u00e9,\u201d<\/a> set the Dominican-Puerto Rican singer up as a eminent force in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/remezcla.com\/music\/editorial-note-remezcla-will-no-longer-use-the-terms-urbano-musica-urbana\/\">El Movimiento<\/a>. Since 2017, he\u2019s released a steady stream of popet\u00f3n albums that have racked up statues at every major award ceremony, including two Latin Grammys. He\u2019s worked with everyone relevant in El Movimiento\u2019s mainstream, from upstart Manuel Turizo to Spanish pop experimentalist Rosal\u00eda, on the tropicore duet <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2j3x0VYnehg\">\u201cYo x Ti, Tu x Mi.\u201d<\/a> Outside of the reggaeton sphere, Ozuna\u2019s collaborations can sometimes feel like copy-pastes from a label seeking to pair him with the moment\u2019s in-demand talent. Global hit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ixkoVwKQaJg\">\u201cTaki Taki,\u201d<\/a> with Cardi B and Selena Gomez, and more off-the-cuff collaborations like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K2kUyHgadQo\">\u201cDel Mar,\u201d<\/a> which features Sia and Doja Cat, can feel like the sonic equivalent of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/767230486500109396\/\">that meme where a chocolate bar swims in ramen<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>            Still, you can\u2019t deny the guy\u2019s voice, a tenor that\u2019s striking on even the most innocuous beats, or his versatility. His oeuvre runs the gamut from tracks like the Akon-assisted afrobeats-lite song <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dG1my0cpTc8\">\u201cCom\u00e9ntale\u201d<\/a> to a number of songs with longtime hero <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wfWkmURBNv8\">Romeo Santos<\/a> that meld Ozuna\u2019s radio-friendly reggaeton sound with bachata. He\u2019s further delved into his Dominican roots on a remix of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NDe4b0jSHYI\">\u201cBaje Con Trenza\u201d<\/a> with dembow OGs  Kiko el Crazy and El Cherry Scom, and as recently as last year on Ozotuchi dembow-dancehall cut <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9rhO5fRBJ9s\">\u201cSomos Iguales\u201d<\/a> with the DR\u2019s firebrand of the moment Tokischa. Working from behind the teddy bear fa\u00e7ade has yielded Ozuna a low-key public persona, a swath of relatively safe, formulaic hits, and an inoffensive <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> presence. <\/p>\n<p>            Which is not to say that zone of safety is where he wants to be. Somewhat surprisingly, Ozuna tells me he insisted on doing this interview at his house. \u201cI love doing these more personal interviews,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s always like \u2018Oh, come to Univision.\u2019 I\u2019ve done so much of that. It\u2019s like going on autopilot. His visage appears again this year on <i>Afro<\/i>, a lively EP of afrobeats tracks. The choice seems more aesthetic than emotional, though he\u2019s always taken pride in his status as one of the most prominent Afro-Latinx artists on the charts. When he was younger, he stood up to a classmate who chided him by saying, \u201cthere\u2019s no Black kid in the Backstreet Boys.\u201d Now, one of his trademark shoutouts is \u201cThe Negrito With Light Eyes,\u201d whose acronym, ENOC, gives Ozuna\u2019s fourth album its name. In embracing his Blackness, Ozuna also honors the genre\u2019s roots: the booming dembow beat behind every reggaeton track you\u2019ve ever heard \u2014 the \u201cPounder\u201d riddim created by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yi2C-nS4TkI\">\u201cDennis the Menace\u201d Halliburton<\/a>, itself derived from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fw31EJUB-tw\">\u201cFish Market\u201d<\/a> riddim made by Jamaican dancehall progenitors Steely &amp; Clevie \u2014 is a Black beat. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cI think a lot of time has passed since the conversation of Afro-Latinidad being a new concept: Me and Gata [reggaeton scholar Katelina Eccleston, of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reggaetonconlagata.com\">Reggaeton Con La Gata<\/a>] pushed for the term El Movimiento rather than m\u00fasica urbana because reggaeton, reggae, and Dominican dembow are one singular movement with multiple genres that were embedded with forced migration,\u201d says journalist and reggaeton expert Jennifer Mota, who profiled Ozuna for a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vibe.com\/features\/editorial\/ozuna-cover-story-670013\/\">2019 Vibe cover story<\/a>. \u201cAll of these genres have Black influences. They&#8217;re like sister genres that evolved parallel to each other, and they&#8217;ve always made people dance. margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-256988\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            It\u2019s not lost on Ozuna that he felt okay to put out an afrobeats album only recently, though he\u2019s dipped a toe in the genre here and there \u2014 such as on the Cardi-B assisted Aura standout <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X8sSXU-J8fI\">\u201cLa Modelo.\u201d<\/a> After George Floyd\u2019s murder at the hands of police in 2020, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/long_reads\/reggaeton-black-lives-matter-race-latin-b1765749.html\">global racial reckoning<\/a> in music made waves in El Movimiento, with an emphasis on the genre\u2019s Black roots. \u201cI always liked afrobeats and Jamaican music, I\u2019m a <i>saz\u00f3n moreno<\/i> that I don\u2019t even know how to explain,\u201d he says. \u201cIn Europe, afrobeats is a whole thing: Davido, Burna Boy, Omah Lay\u2026 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qdvYRpyF6D8\">\u2018Eva Longoria\u2019<\/a> [his collab with Davido on Afro] hit big in Spain. I dared to try because that\u2019s what was happening in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            The cover of Ozuna\u2019s sixth album <i>Cosmo<\/i>, out November 17, continues his efforts to show up face-first. The teddy bear is nodded at but is transmuted into a yin-yang logo. In its place, we see Ozuna front and center cradled by a circle of women clad in black. He sings about a heartbroken alt-girl dancing alone at the club who \u201conly listens to Nirvana \/ With a broken heart no one can fix\u201d. The video sees Ozuna brandishing robotic arm extensions \u00e0 la Arca and dancing in the middle of a pit surrounded by neck-tattooed, leather-clad extras, imagery more in line with <i>The Matrix<\/i> or a Rick Owens runway than a multi-colored plush toy in a sweater. <\/p>\n<p>            <i>Cosmo<\/i> is the first time Ozuna has devoted more than a year to an album. The collection boasts several features \u2014 including David Guetta on \u201cVocation\u201d, an EDM track that shares a name with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tapasmagazine.es\/vocation-la-nueva-marca-de-champagne-del-cantante-ozuna\/\">Ozuna\u2019s champagne brand<\/a> \u2014 ranging from Plan B\u2019s Chencho Corleone and Maldy to frequent collaborators Anuel AA and De La Ghetto. He\u2019s sharpened his sound, too: songs like \u201c100 Squats\u201d drip nasty bass straight out of a <i>marquesina<\/i>; \u201cBaccarat\u201d has an elegant radio-ready swagger destined to make it a club hit. Chencho-assisted initial single <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pUO3gCUg-0U\">\u201cEl Plan,\u201d<\/a> released after the album\u2019s untimely leak, sees Ozuna swaggering about in a black Balenciaga fit. \u201cFenti\u201d, a more floaty downbeat reggaeton featuring Jhayco (FKA Jhay Cortez) is accompanied by a video where he and Ozuna float in black trench coats amid a tornado of angels, an image that calls to mind Gustave Dor\u00e9\u2019s illustrations of Dante Alighieri\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2019\/02\/gustave-dores-haunting-illustrations-of-dantes-divine-comedy.html\"><i>Divine Comedy<\/i><\/a> and early 2000s action-horror films like <i>Van Helsing<\/i>. \u201cThese are dryer reggaetons: &#8216;Baccarat&#8217; sounds like an old classic track from when Chencho and Maldy [Plan B] or Rasta y Gringo were outside,\u201d he says. \u201cWe wanted to bring out that underground vibe. Many of those artists weren&#8217;t overly proud of their Dominican identity because at the time Dominicans were discriminated against in Puerto Rico \u2014 the majority were Black,\u201d adds Mota. \u201cDominicans are largely proud of our identity, but those of us born or raised in Puerto Rico didn&#8217;t have that energy. The awards show was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2023-mtv-emas-canceled-israel-hamas-war-e182a3a6e320f237ae7c66bc467e5a32#:~:text=PARIS%20(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20The%20MTV,to%20Mars%20among%20the%20performers.\">canceled<\/a>, with MTV saying that as \u201cthe devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration.\u201d Ozuna performed in Tel Aviv for the second time <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/culture\/article-753460\">as recently as this August<\/a>, and was photographed wrapping himself in the blue and white flag onstage. It\u2019s typical reggaeton-star-on-tour behavior that\u2019s in line with his history as a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly apolitical star. Compared to more <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/21\/opinions\/bad-bunny-puerto-rico-hurricane-fiona-morales\/index.html\">outspoken reggaetoneros<\/a>, especially other Boricuas, he hasn\u2019t been one to speak out against oppressive powers. It\u2019s a piece of land that\u2019s not doing anything, and people with a lot of power and money are fighting for nothing,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat is the President doing in Israel in the middle of this war? It\u2019s unnecessary. When I [performed there, in 2019], it was the first time I had <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed that far with my music. Everyone treated me with a lot of love. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI think what\u2019s happening is part of a plan to animalize people: not only [Palestinians], but a lot of other people around the world,\u201d he continues. \u201cIt used to be that [after 9\/11] you\u2019d see an Arab person at an airport or on a plane and feel uncomfortable, and that\u2019s because an image was created of them that wasn\u2019t true.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-256991\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s no more exclusivity or professionalism: we\u2019re all on the same boat, riding the same <i>guagua<\/i>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-256969\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Violence has marked Ozuna\u2019s entire life. His father, a Dominican backup dancer for legendary Boricua rapper Vico C, was shot to death in Puerto Rico when he was three years old. He never met him. Four years ago, he was linked to the tragic shooting of gay trapero Kevin Fret, an investigation that was paused in its early stages but was recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.primerahora.com\/noticias\/policia-tribunales\/notas\/investigadores-amanecen-en-la-escena-donde-fue-asesinado-kevin-fret\/\">picked back up<\/a>. Fret had been extorting Ozuna, threatening to release an explicit video filmed when Ozuna was underage, and was killed shortly after. His murder remains unsolved.<\/p>\n<p>            Ozuna has acknowledged the extortion and publicly apologized for the video, but the incident has cast a shadow over him that\u2019s been hard to shake. With the rampant \u2014 and often fatal \u2014 homophobia and transphobia in Puerto Rican society and at large being publicly discussed by contemporaries like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/29\/us\/alexa-puerto-rico-transgender-killing\/index.html\">Bad Bunny<\/a> and trans artists on the rise like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/latin\/villano-antillano-pride-reshaping-rap-genre-1235083986\/\">Villano Antillano<\/a>, Ozuna\u2019s silence on Fret\u2019s murder has been conspicuous. My father was killed in Puerto Rico when he was 19, and that makes me respect Kevin\u2019s death. I stayed on the margins out of that respect for his family, and for what happened. It\u2019s a delicate topic, because you have to respect a family, a mother. My heart is clean, and it has been since day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            It seems as if Fret\u2019s death, combined with the ongoing siege in Gaza, has struck Ozuna with a sense of clarity. \u201cWe\u2019re all on the same level now,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s no more exclusivity or professionalism: we\u2019re all on the same boat, riding the same <i>guagua<\/i>. Left or right, Black or white, what we\u2019re dealing with now is people worried about power.
