Andr\u00e9 3000\u2018s output over the last decade may be largely limited to the occasional show-stopping guest verse, but it turns out the OutKast legend has been more prolific than fans realize.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with GQ<\/em><\/a>\u00a0ahead of the release of his new album New Blue Sun<\/em>, 3 Stacks spoke in depth about his love for playing the flute and revealed he\u2019s secretly lent his wind instrument skills to releases from \u201cknown artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 said he was credited for his contributions, but the reason they were able to fly under the radar is because he used different names \u2014 much like when he adopted the moniker Earthtone III when producing OutKast records alongside Big Boi and Mr. DJ.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve actually played some wind things that I\u2019ve put out in the world that I called myself another name under different artists that are out there that, you know, I was just kinda testing it out in a way,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom known artists, and they\u2019ve been cool about keeping it secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI wasn\u2019t sure how to present the wind thing because I would just be on the street and playing [it]. I play in nature a lot. I play [while] hiking, walking, in the city, wherever. And what started to happ<\/a>en was people started filming me on their cellphones and posting it and making beats out of it which is cool to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was trying to find a way, how can I share my love for discovering this wind instrument with more people where it\u2019s not this kind of Where\u2019s Waldo?<\/em>, there\u2019s this dude playing kinda thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Andr\u00e9 3000 didn\u2019t divulge any of the artists he\u2019s secretly worked with (for obvious reasons), a bit of digging reveals he played the bass clarinet on James Blake\u2018s 2019 track \u201cWhere\u2019s the Catch?,\u201d which he also has a guest verse on.<\/p>\n

He also lent his woodwind skills to jazz collective Carlos Ni\u00f1o & Friends\u2019 recent album (I\u2019m just) Chillin\u2019, on Fire<\/em>, as well as the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>.<\/p>\n

His earliest woodwind performance came on OutKast\u2019s 2003 double album Speakerboxxx\/The Love Below<\/em>, with 3 Stacks responsible for the wailing clarinet noises at the end of \u201cShe Lives in My Lap.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Blue Sun<\/em>, out Friday (November 17), serves as both Andr\u00e9 3000\u2019s debut solo album and first full-length offering as a flute player. It\u2019s described as \u201ca stunning 87-minute mind-bender, minimalist and experimental, tribal and transcendent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project doesn\u2019t feature any rapping or singing, nor does it co-star any of his Hip Hop contemporaries. Instead, it\u2019s a fully instrumental effort created with jazz musicians like Carlos Ni\u00f1o, Surya Botofasina and Nate Mercereau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to be out here [rapping] with everybody, but it\u2019s just not happening for me,\u201d 3 Stacks admitted in a recent interview with NPR<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThis is the realest thing that\u2019s coming right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot to say that I would never do it again, but those are not the things that are coming right now. And I have to present what\u2019s given to me at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
