<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jon Ossoff won his Georgia Senate seat by a nose \u2014 or, rather, despite it.<\/p>\n<p>His Republican opponent, David Perdue,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/world\/jon-ossoff-david-perdue-antisemitic-facebook-ad-enlarged-doctored-nose-georgia-senate-race\/8bf7a61d-3437-49e8-af48-bd38567d254e\">ran online ads<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 that enlarged Ossoff\u2019s nose and juxtaposed Ossoff\u2019s image with Sen. Chuck Schumer, a fellow Jew, claiming \u201cDemocrats are trying to buy Georgia.\u201d Ossoff, a descendant of pogrom survivors, rightly called the ads antisemitic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Marc Rowan, the billionaire CEO of private equity giant Apollo Global Management,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?contributor_name=Marc+Rowan\">supported the campaign<\/a>\u00a0to defeat Ossoff. That\u2019s the same Marc Rowan who is now attacking the University of Pennsylvania for allowing the Palestine Writes Literary Festival to occur on campus and failing to condemn its speakers \u2014 poets, mainly \u2014 as antisemites. As the advisory Board Chair of UPenn\u2019s Wharton business school, Rowan <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/opinion-upenns-moral-compass-navigating-controversy-surrounding-palestine-writes-festival\/\">published an opinion essay<\/a>\u00a0asking alumni to \u201cclose their checkbooks until [UPenn\u2019s] President Magill and Chairman Bok resign.\u201d Though the op-ed\u2019s impetus was the horrific October 7 Hamas attack, the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/power\/2023-10-21-moral-authority-of-marc-rowan\/\">festival actually peacefully preceded<\/a>\u00a0it in September. Poets, to Rowan, are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts & Themes & Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently more dangerous than politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is Rowan alone. Hedge fund billionaire Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management is also\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/18\/business\/upenn-donor-israel\/index.html\">calling for a UPenn management purge<\/a>\u00a0while simultaneously\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?contributor_name=asness&contributor_employer=aqr\">donating to the same Senate Leadership<\/a>\u00a0Fund as Rowan. That political action committee spent $92 million on Ossoff attack ads,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2020\/12\/a-misleading-dark-money-attack-on-ossoff\/\">some featuring Ossoff, Schumer and Bernie Sanders<\/a>\u00a0in shadowy cabal-like poses with the tag line \u201cThe radical left bought Ossoff because if he wins, they control everything.\u201d The only ways this antisemitic dog whistle could be clearer would be with the word \u201cglobalist\u201d or footage of George Soros tying a virtuous gentile to the railroad tracks. According to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senateleadershipfund.org\/\">PAC\u2019s homepage<\/a>, its \u201cone goal\u201d is \u201cto build a Republican Senate majority that will defend America from Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats\u2019 destructive far-left agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right-wing Jews like Rowan and Asness do more harm to the Jewish people than literature festivals ever could. But right-wingers characterize lefties like me as \u201cself-hating Jews\u201d because we support the Palestinians\u2019 right to exist in their own state and are against the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza as a response to the Hamas attack. Yet while Rowan and Asness are fomenting antisemitism by donating millions to a party full of white nationalists, including the $500,000 Rowan gave to Donald Trump\u2019s 2020 reelection campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These differences between right-wing and left-wing Jews are not unique; they exist in America as a whole. In simplest terms, to the right, America is a place and, to the left, it\u2019s an idea. America to Republicans is its land, borders and property rights, or, in Wall Street terms Rowan and Asness would recognize, shareholder rights. White nationalists want to keep outsiders off their land and property, be it the government in the form of taxation or foreigners with different skin colors. Individual property rights take precedence over global human rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>America to left-wing Democrats is the idea of democracy and equality found in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. For Jews especially, it\u2019s also the idea of America being a sanctuary to refugees seeking that equality. The Statue of Liberty holds a tablet marking the Declaration of Independence, and its \u201cgive me your tired, your poor\u201d inscription was written by Emma Lazarus, who was both a radical left-wing poet and an advocate for Jewish refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Jews were among the first refugees in recorded history. After the Romans destroyed the second temple in Jerusalem in 70 C.E., we left Israel and thus became great by creating a humane religion that could be practiced anywhere. That religion was about ideas and people, loving God and thy neighbor, not a nationalist fatherland. A minyan of ten Jews in any spot makes a congregation. This is why speeches by nationalists like Britain\u2019s Teresa May \u2014 who in 2016 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/helenldecruz.medium.com\/the-anti-semitic-origins-of-citizens-of-nowhere-3e50436e6fc3\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIf you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere\u201d\u00a0\u2014 are arguably antisemitic, alluding to Hitler\u2019s belief that Jews are a \u201crootless\u201d people \u201cwho feel at home everywhere.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>For centuries, Jews in Europe\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/antisemitism-in-history-the-early-modern-era-1300-1800\">legally couldn\u2019t own land<\/a>, so being a nationalist tribally attached to your parcel was functionally impossible. But Israel\u2019s statehood brought forth right-wing Jewish nationalism, and it\u2019s as toxic and narrow-minded in the ultraconservative Likud Party there as white Christian nationalism is in the GOP in America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The right-wing conflation of Israel with Judaism \u2014 and that if you\u2019re critical of Israel\u2019s nationalist policies, you\u2019re antisemitic \u2014 contradicts liberal diaspora philosophy. That philosophy is democratic in its tolerance of dissenting viewpoints, with its Talmudic tradition of rabbinical debate over scriptural interpretation. Hence the saying \u201ctwo Jews, three opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump embodies the nationalists\u2019 property-based ethos. Right-wing Jews see him as \u201cgood for the Jews\u201d because\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/05\/middleeast\/trump-jerusalem-explainer-intl\/index.html\">in 2017 he recognized Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital<\/a>, even though the land title of the holy city has long been disputed between members of the three Abrahamic religions. Palestinians also call it their capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Also in 2017, Trump said there were \u201cvery fine people\u201d at the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally, where torch-carrying white nationalists shouted \u201cJews shall not replace us,\u201d and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood_and_soil\">\u201cblood and soil,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a Nazi slogan about the German fatherland. Trump <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/resources\/blog\/extremists-react-trump-dinner-ye-and-nick-fuentes\">had a friendly dinner<\/a>\u00a0last year with Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist leader, and received Klansman David Duke\u2019s endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s anti-globalist rhetoric endangers diaspora Jews. There is a direct line from anti-globalist rhetoric to the 2018 attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 Jews were murdered. The white nationalist killer specifically mentioned the congregants\u2019 membership in the 142-year old Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/our-columnists\/why-the-tree-of-life-shooter-was-fixated-on-the-hebrew-immigrant-aid-society\">an organization to help refugees<\/a>, as his motive. Notably, Emma Lazarus was also a HIAS volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>Such nationalist rhetoric has only become worse in recent days. Trump has promised\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2023\/11\/trump-vermin-hitler.html\">to \u201croot out\u201d the \u201cvermin\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on the left and said that undocumented immigrants are\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-immigration-rhetoric.html\">\u201cpoisoning the blood of our country.\u201d<\/a> He plans to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-2025-immigration-agenda.html\">round up migrants and put them in camps<\/a>. Hitler also called the Jews vermin and said they were poisoning the blood of the Aryan race.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-war-rhetoric.html\">called Palestinians \u201cAmalek,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a reference to the biblical enemy of the Israelites that must be annihilated. Some Likud party members have called to\u00a0\u201cerase Gaza\u201d or even nuke it, despite the fact that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/gaza-children-traumatised-by-bombardment-with-ground-war-start-2023-10-21\/\">almost half<\/a> of Gaza\u2019s 2.3 million population are children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, wealthy university donors like Rowan and Asness have called student protestors across the country antisemitic for criticizing Israel. But Judaism to many diaspora Jews isn\u2019t the Israeli state.
