This was the era of \u201cGarden State\u201d and \u201c(500) Days of Summer\u201d \u2014\u00a0stories about lost, lonely young men pining after exciting, elusive women whose charm brought them out of their shell. The \u201cScott Pilgrim\u201d comics\u2019 titular Toronto bassist fit this de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion to a tee, pursuing the pink-haired delivery girl Ramona Flowers by doing battle with her League of Evil Exes. (Influenced by Japanese <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manga<\/a>, \u201cScott Pilgrim\u201d rendered typical relationship anxieties in the heightened language of video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s.) In Edgar Wright\u2019s beloved film adaptation, Scott was played by Michael Cera, the doe-eyed poster child for beta masculinity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    This is not to criticize \u201cScott Pilgrim,\u201d but simply to note that it\u2019s a story very much of its time. Yet O\u2019Malley, in partnership with writer BenDavid Grabinski, has brought the franchise into 2023 with a new animated series for Netflix, revisiting his best-known work after over a decade. At first, \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d seems like a straightforward adaptation, just rendered in the visual style of O\u2019Malley\u2019s original artwork instead of Wright\u2019s kinetic live action. (Wright remains involved as an executive producer.) The film\u2019s entire cast, from Cera to Chris Evans to Aubrey Plaza, even reprises their roles as voice performers. But at the end of its pilot, \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d swerves in an unexpected direction \u2014 one that both distinguishes the show from previous iterations of the \u201cScott Pilgrim\u201d concept and comments on them from our current cultural vantage point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    O\u2019Malley, Grabinski and their collaborators have kept the details of \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d tightly under wraps, including the basic premise of its plot. Those who would like to respect their wishes should stop reading after this paragraph. Before they go, though, I\u2019ll sum up my feelings in the broadest possible terms: \u201cTakes Off\u201d successfully combines the innovative style and comic charm of its predecessors with a new spin that corrects for the tropes we can now see with hindsight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    For everyone else: \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d is not, it turns out, about Scott Pilgrim. Ramona Flowers (Mary-Elizabeth Winstead) has gone from the somewhat passive object of Scott\u2019s aspiration \u2014 partners past and present literally fight over her! \u2014 to a woman on a quest of her own. When Scott\u2019s first face-off against Ramona\u2019s ex Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha) goes suddenly awry, the audience realizes they\u2019re no longer watching the \u201cScott Pilgrim\u201d they thought they knew. From there, Ramona goes on her own mission, reckoning with past relationships and coming into clearer focus as a character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    She\u2019s not the only supporting player in the video-game influenced world of \u201cScott Pilgrim\u201d to benefit from Scott\u2019s reduced role. Scott\u2019s love interest before Ramona, the teenaged Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), gets a personality beyond her puppy-dog crush \u2014\u00a0of which \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d takes pains to note the iffy power dynamics, while also explicitly stating Knives and Scott have never so much as kissed. The Evil Exes, too, get more depth and nuance. Final boss Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman) gets an origin story; Ramona\u2019s college ex Roxy (Mae Whitman) gets closure and an emotional breakthrough. Television offers a roomier canvas than film, so O\u2019Malley and Grabinski can be more generous with their spotlight than Wright could be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    With animation, \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d can also achieve a more thorough and playful homage to its influences. Japan-based studio <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Saru helps enliven O\u2019Malley\u2019s previously static artwork, which combines gaming with the conventions of <em>shonen, <\/em>or boys\u2019, comics. In one sequence, Ramona\u2019s movie star ex Lucas Lee (Evans) squares off against a fleet of ninja-like paparazzi who multiply around him. The scene is playful and clever, just like how every episode\u2019s title card includes a \u201cStart Here\u201d button to mimic a video game home screen or how one character\u2019s defeat turns their body into a pile of coins, like points to be collected. Japanese rock band contributes an earworm of a theme song, while American group Anamanaguchi supplies the rest of the soundtrack (yes, there\u2019s a Metric cover).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d is simple and fun, but it\u2019s not exactly meant for kids; Ramona and Scott explicitly discuss whether or not to have sex on their first date. Rather, the show is meant for former kids revisiting an old favorite through more grown-up eyes. To serve that audience, it has to supply both nostalgic comfort and novelty inflected with self-awareness. It\u2019s not an easy assignment, but like a triumphant gamer, \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d completes its mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    <em>All eight episodes of \u201cScott Pilgrim Takes Off\u201d are now streaming on Netflix.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
