\n The G.O.A.T. is taking on a greater role.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeopardy!\u201d champ Ken Jennings, 46, has been brought on as a consulting producer for the long-running quiz show, leading some fans to speculate he\u2019s preparing to take over as host for an ailing Alex Trebek, 80.<\/p>\n

Jennings, who recently defeated the show\u2019s all-time best contestants, will present some video categories, develop projects, find new contestants and be a general<\/a> ambassador for the show when it returns on Monday, September 14. His first video category will air the following day, TV Line reports.<\/p>\n

His new gig caps a 16-year history with the show. He started out with a bang, breaking the show\u2019s record for longest winning streak at 74 victories, and went on to app<\/a>ear in multiple championship tournaments. In total, the software engineer turned author from Seattle has earned a whopping $4,370,700.<\/p>\n

Trebek, meanwhile, is continuing his battle against pancreatic cancer, which he was diagnosed with last March. Though he has said the treatment has taken a toll on his body, he has survived longer than most patients with the aggressive cancer, partially thanks to immunotherapy treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel good, and I feel excited because once again \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 has demonstrated that it\u2019s at the forefront of television programming,\u201d Trebek said in a statement about Jennings\u2019 promotion. \u201cI believe we are the first quiz show to come back on the air in the COVID-19 era. On a personal level, I\u2019m excited because it gets me out of the house. It gives me something to do on a regular basis, and I was missing that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans immedia<\/a>tely grew concerned that Jennings\u2019 new role meant that the show was preparing to replace Trebek.<\/p>\n

\u201cI smell a transition plan,\u201d wrote @eybyon in response to the show\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody\u2019s being groomed for the host spot\u2026\u201d tweeted @downandaway2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cHope this isn\u2019t what I think it is,\u201d wrote @BaseballBallet. \u201cBut I love Ken Jennings. He\u2019s the only champ worthy of sharing the mic with the great one.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Trebek assured his loyal following that he\u2019s still got it.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll still be the host,\u201d Trebek said in a video about the new season. \u201cAnd I\u2019m looking forward to seeing you.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
