A House Democrat who was granted anonymity by the outlet said Democrats are \u201cmoving toward\u201d pushing for conditions on future support for Israel\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The member said they had never heard the idea being discussed until Israel ramped up its bombardment of airstrikes and launched a ground operation on the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza. In the weeks since Hamas entered Israel in a deadly surprise attack that killed 1,200 people, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Authority reports that more than 11,100 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed from Israel\u2019s counteroffensive.<\/p>\n<p>The onset of the conflict has highlighted the established Democratic divisions over Middle East policy. Democrats posted online both supporting or opposing the idea of conditioning aid for Israel. <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) has been an outspoken advocate of Israel\u2019s right to defend itself against Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot abandon our obligation to free hostages, secure Israel\u2019s democracy and eradicate Hamas,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDWStweets\/status\/1726027783778783257?s=20\">Wasserman Schultz said in a post on X<\/a>, the platform formerly known as Twitter. \u201cConditioning aid to Israel is a gift to Iran and Hamas at the expense of innocent lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) said in a post that he disagrees with the Democrats who are suggesting the change in funding to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t agree with conditioning aid to Israel when Republicans did it and I don\u2019t agree if Democrats are trying to do it,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepAuchincloss\/status\/1726027288964182380?s=20\">his post said.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) disagreed with the report. She said that the \u201cmajority of Democrats,\u201d herself included, have pushed for aid for Israel \u201cto move as soon as possible\u201d without conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will deliver on President Biden\u2019s principles request as Israel defends herself from the terrorist threat that is Hamas,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepLoisFrankel\/status\/1725999412944449743?s=20\">Frankel\u2019s post said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said he is \u201copposed to attempts to condition aid\u201d to Israel, calling the discussions <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepStenyHoyer\/status\/1726060489073914261?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepStenyHoyer\/status\/1726060489073914261?s=20\">\u201can irresponsible move.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Other members said conditioning aid would be a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/1725995651018695086?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/1725995651018695086?s=20\">\u201cslippery slope\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lawler4ny\/status\/1726071519468503238?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lawler4ny\/status\/1726071519468503238?s=20\">\u201coutrageous.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JaredEMoskowitz\/status\/1725985718621643015?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JaredEMoskowitz\/status\/1725985718621643015?s=20\">posted online<\/a> saying that he thinks the U.S. should be sending money to both Israel and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said she supports conditioning aid to Israel, \u201cas we do with virtually all other US allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that public resources do not facilitate gross violations of human rights and international law,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AOC\/status\/1726012499395506454?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AOC\/status\/1726012499395506454?s=20\">her post said. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the Politico report, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) hosted a lunch this week for Democrats to discuss the Israel-Hamas war.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not determined how \u2013 or if \u2013 the conditions on military aid for Israel would work, but the lawmakers that spoke with Politico said conversations are about using the Leahy Law, which prohibits sending funds to countries that violate human rights. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The discussions come as fighting in Gaza has intensified. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the House passed a $14.3 billion aid package for Israel in a win for Republicans. <\/p>\n<p>It was reported Saturday evening that a possible deal between Israel and Hamas has been reached, facilitated by the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
