{"id":598366,"date":"2023-11-21T00:20:23","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T21:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/how-microsoft-wins-after-the-openai-shake-up\/"},"modified":"2023-11-21T00:20:23","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T21:20:23","slug":"how-microsoft-wins-after-the-openai-shake-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/how-microsoft-wins-after-the-openai-shake-up\/","title":{"rendered":"#How Microsoft wins after the OpenAI shake-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/altmansam_051623gn03_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nearly one year after OpenAI launched the popular ChatGPT tool, company CEO and co-founder Sam Altman is heading to Microsoft after a surprise ousting.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Monday that Altman, along with former OpenAI President and fellow co-founder Greg Brockman, will lead a generative artificial intelligence (AI) team at the tech giant.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The announcement c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed off a weekend of tumultuous <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> after the OpenAI board of directors fired Altman on Friday evening. Altman\u2019s ouster and Brockman\u2019s decision to follow him could leave Microsoft on the winning side of the turmoil. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and worked closely with the company by incorporating ChatGPT into Microsoft products. The company\u2019s partnership with OpenAI kept Microsoft in a leading position in the AI arms race that heated up this year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Altman directly under Microsoft, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said the company stands to gain more. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes it a lot cleaner that he\u2019s under them.\u00a0That\u2019s why I think Microsoft ultimately ends up in a better position than it was Friday,\u201d Ives said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ives said he expects Microsoft to pull ahead of OpenAI in AI innovation with Altman on board, and that Microsoft\u2019s hiring of the \u201cgolden child of AI\u201d is \u201cmusic to the ears of investors.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sarah Kreps, professor of government and director of the Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University, said the biggest battle in the AI space right now is over talent. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFinding people who are smart, have good ideas and are determined, because everyone\u2019s chasing after the same people, and now Microsoft just got this huge windfall of talent. And so Microsoft\u2019s gain is really OpenAI\u2019s loss at this point,\u201d Kreps said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te aftermath it appeared that OpenAI employees were not happy with the board\u2019s decision to oust Altman. Hundreds of employees <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/20\/tech\/openai-employees-quit-mira-murati-sam-altman\/index.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/20\/tech\/openai-employees-quit-mira-murati-sam-altman\/index.html\">signed a letter<\/a> threatening to leave OpenAI, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-staff-walk-protest-sam-altman\/#:~:text=OpenAI%20was%20in%20open%20revolt,by%20the%20board%20on%20Friday.\">according to multiple reports<\/a>, unless Altman and Brockman are reinstated and the board members resign. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s new interim CEO, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, announced Monday he will launch an investigation into the process that led to Altman\u2019s ousting. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Kreps said it will be interesting to see how many OpenAI employees move over to Microsoft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam Altman was getting so much attention, and it seems at this point that was for good reason. I mean, the loyalty that he has from his employees is just rare and astonishing. And I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if most of them did follow him to Microsoft,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also said the changing dynamic between OpenAI and Microsoft could change the culture to create a different space to attract new AI talent to the mainstream tech giant, rather than to the up-and-coming OpenAI that was generating immense buzz over the past year. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The shakeup could also benefit other tech companies looking to hire talent as they build and invest in AI. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google launched Bard, a ChatGPT rival, earlier this year and has been competing to get ahead of Microsoft on AI. Amazon in September announced it will invest $4B in AI startup Anthropic. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ives said the OpenAI shakeup is putting the industry in \u201chunting season.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cGoogle, Amazon, Apple and others, they\u2019re going to go after some of these AI engineers and developers that are sought after,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does create a bit of an air pocket and some chaos that could benefit some of the large tech players.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
