{"id":598443,"date":"2023-11-21T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/senate-democrats-shoot-down-biden-naysayers-in-party\/"},"modified":"2023-11-21T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T11:00:00","slug":"senate-democrats-shoot-down-biden-naysayers-in-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/senate-democrats-shoot-down-biden-naysayers-in-party\/","title":{"rendered":"#Senate Democrats shoot down Biden naysayers in party\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/bidenjoe_111423mn04_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Democrats are pushing back hard on criticism from within their own party that President Biden\u2019s poll numbers are so weak that the party should replace him atop the ticket, dismissing concerns about Biden\u2019s electability as totally counterproductive. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the sharpest criticism of Biden\u2019s electability has come from former President Obama\u2019s senior political adviser David Axelrod, who is warning that Biden has no better than a 50-50 chance of winning reelection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Senate Democrats, whose majority is entwined with Biden\u2019s fate in the next election, are making it clear they don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciate Axelrod and other Democrats badmouthing the president\u2019s chances in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see no prospect of an alternative right now. I think Joe Biden is in really good shape, mentally. I was with him two hours on Wednesday night. He is sharp, informed and extraordinarily discreet and insightful in comments on very sensitive policy areas like Israel and domestic challenges,\u201d Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will beat Donald Trump if Democrats rally behind him and discard the handwringing\u00a0and the eyeball rolling,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic senators say talk about replacing him as their nominee for president fails to account for his legislative accomplishments and the fact that the first primary contests of 2024 are only a few weeks away. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While polls show a majority of Democratic voters would prefer to have someone else as their party\u2019s nominee, Senate Democrats decided early on to coalesce behind the president and refuse to entertain any discussions about flipping him off the ticket. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo all my fellow Democrats \u2014 STOP!!\u00a0We need to stop wringing our hands over the pundits and the polls!\u201d Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stabenow\/status\/1722694782433026113\">recently posted on X<\/a>, the platform formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. She pointed to Democratic victories this month in Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania as reason for optimism heading into next year\u2019s presidential election. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also slapped down talk of replacing Biden as the party\u2019s nominee after a New York Times\/Siena College poll showed him trailing former President Trump in five battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe President Biden will win the election, he will beat President Trump and I believe that all of the good things that President Biden has done, the people are learning about it, week by week and state by state,\u201d Schumer said when asked about the poll that has set off alarm bells among other Democrats. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/05\/us\/politics\/biden-trump-2024-poll.html\">New York Times\/Siena poll<\/a> received a lot of media coverage, Democratic lawmakers are dismissing it as an early snapshot of a political environment that will change significantly over the 11 months before Election Day 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re a year out. I think poll numbers \u2014 you can\u2019t believe poll numbers anyway,\u201d said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who faces a competitive reelection race in a state where Trump beat Biden by 17 percentage points in 2020. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the poll has given an opening for Biden\u2019s critics within the party to push for a change at the top of the ticket. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he has a 50-50 shot here, but no better than that, maybe a little worse,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/18\/opinion\/biden-trump-axelrod-anger.html\">Axelrod told The New York Times\u2019s Maureen Dowd<\/a>, citing the president\u2019s age as a major factor. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks he can cheat nature here, and it\u2019s really risky. They\u2019ve got real problems if they\u2019re counting on Trump to win it for them. I remember [Hillary Clinton] doing that, too,\u201d Axelrod warned, alluding to Biden\u2019s age. The president turned 81 Monday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Axelrod suggested that Biden consider dropping his bid for a second term when the Times\/Siena poll came out earlier this month, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidaxelrod\/status\/1721189538880516252\">posting on X<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cIf he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it\u2019s in HIS best interest or the country\u2019s?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This kind of talk is rankling Democratic senators who have to protect vulnerable incumbents in Arizona, Montana, Nevada, Ohio and Pennsylvania. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>They worry that talk among prominent Democrats such as Axelrod about what those critics perceive as Biden\u2019s weakness could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur biggest problem is we get into our own heads on this stuff and then it becomes a thing,\u201d said one Democratic senator, who requested anonymity to discuss the second thoughts some fellow Democrats are having about Biden as the nominee. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ross K. Baker, a professor of political <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> at Rutgers University, noted that Biden doesn\u2019t face a serious primary challenger and that any attempt at this point to reorganize the Democratic presidential ticket would throw the party into disarray.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He said Axelrod\u2019s comments about Biden are \u201cunhelpful\u201d to Democrats politically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstandably there\u2019s always been some tension between the Obama people and the Biden people but to give voice to it so openly seems to me politically foolish,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warned \u201cif enough people\u201d in the party question Biden\u2019s competence as a candidate \u201cit\u2019s going to develop a life of its own.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere really isn\u2019t anyone there\u201d to take Biden\u2019s place, he said. \u201cIt would have to be a major restructuring of the Democratic ticket at this point, and no one wants to do it.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic senators, by and large, agree. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are polls out with Biden up outside the margin of error. There are polls showing him behind. The campaign hasn\u2019t started. I do not let myself get worried about polls this far out,\u201d Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, Rep. Dean Phillips (D), a little-known congressman from Minnesota, and self-help author Marianne Williamson, whose campaign for president in 2020 gained little traction, are Biden\u2019s only competition in the Democratic primary. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The one glaring exception to the unity within the Senate Democratic caucus in support of Biden is West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d consider a third-party bid for president. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manchin is planning to go on a national listening tour to see if there is enough appetite among voters in the \u201cmiddle\u201d to support him running for president as a pragmatic centrist. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warned in an NBC interview last week that Biden and Vice President Harris do not make for the strongest 2024 ticket. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really believe the parties are in peril right now, they\u2019re basically attracting the extremes,\u201d he told NBC\u2019s Kristen Welker. \u201cI\u2019m going to do everything in my power to make sure and mobilize the moderate, sensible, commonsense middle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid Joe Biden\u2019s been pushed too far to the left.
