He added that officials reviewed the air monitoring data and decided it was \u201csafe\u201d to let the residents come home.<\/p>\n<p>The CSX train derailed, spilled chemicals and caught fire around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday near the remote town that has a population of about 200 people. The railroad company offered hotel rooms and Thanksgiving meals for those who were displaced, according to AP.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The fire was likely due to the two cars that carried molten sulfur. Two other cars were carrying magnesium hydroxide, but CSX said in a statement they likely weren\u2019t breached in the derailment. The other cars had non-hazardous materials.<\/p>\n<p>Short-term exposure to sulfur dioxide can harm the respiratory system,\u00a0according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/so2-pollution\/sulfur-dioxide-basics#effects\">Environmental Protection Agency.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Tucker said the air quality measurements indicated it was safe for residents to return to the area, the results of the tests have not been released.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Andy Beshear (D), who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.gov\/Pages\/Activity-stream.aspx?n=GovernorBeshear&amp;prId=2036\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.gov\/Pages\/Activity-stream.aspx?n=GovernorBeshear&amp;prId=2036\">declared a state of emergency<\/a> after the derailment, thanked first responders for their work to extinguish the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to the first responders who worked hard to put out the fire at the train derailment site in Rockcastle County,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAndyBeshear\/status\/1727806265307324616\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAndyBeshear\/status\/1727806265307324616\">wrote on X<\/a>, the platform formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there is still work to be done, we are thankful for the good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> that our families in Livingston are able to spend the rest of Thanksgiving at home,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
