“#NYPD preps for \u2018mass arrests\u2019 during upcoming Labor Day weekend<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The NYPD is beefing up patrols \u2014 and bracing for \u2018\u201dmass arrests\u201d \u2014 in central Brooklyn and citywide ahead of the upcoming Labor Day weekend that\u2019s typically marred by violence and supposed to be social<\/a>ly distanced this year, officials and police sources said Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s violence, we\u2019re going to make arrests,\u201d Chief of Department Terence Monahan promised at a press conference Thursday at police headquarters.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, if there\u2019s groups out there, we\u2019re going to try to break it up. We\u2019re not looking to arrest people,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re out to celebrate. But we can\u2019t have the violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

NYPD Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo told reporters during an earlier City Hall press briefing Thursday with Mayor Bill de Blasio that this weekend New Yorkers will \u201csee police officers on foot\u201d and \u201can increased presence, not only in central Brooklyn, but all around city.\u201d<\/p>\n

A police source also told The Post that more court officers will be transferred to Brooklyn for the weekend in anticipation of \u201cmass arrest processing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since June 1, there\u2019s been 708 shootings with 899 victims as compared to 277 shootings with 338 victims during the same period last year, said Monahan.<\/p>\n

And Labor Day weekend in the Big App<\/a>le is a historically violent one, typically because of crime tied to Brooklyn\u2019s J\u2019Ouvert festival ahead of the West Indian Day Parade.<\/p>\n

But this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, both events have been cancelled and instead will be celebrated virtually, officials said.<\/p>\n

NYPD brass, however, is still concerned about large crowds gathering along the parade route in Crown Heights during the holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we have so many cops out there,\u201d Monahan said. \u201cWe need to have enough police out on the street to deal with these large events. \u201cYou know, two cops in a radio car are not going to pull up to 200 people on the corner and be able to move them.\u201d<\/p>\n

This weekend, said Monahan, there will be \u201ca lot more police officers working under the command of superior officers, going together to make sure our cops get out of there safely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be out there in force to fight crime and prevent violence this weekend,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As part of a partnership with the city \u201cto encourage responsible riding and improve street safety,\u201d embattled scooter-sharing company Revel \u201chas agreed\u201d to suspend its services citywide between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day from Thursday evening to Tuesday morning, a Revel spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the NYPD has shifted around some funds to give street cops more overtime through Labor Day, The Post has reported.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, de Blasio on Thursday urged New Yorkers to avoid gathering in large groups this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we can\u2019t have is large gatherings,\u201d de Blasio said, noting that New Yorkers are only permitted to gather in groups of up to 50 or less due to COVID-19 state regulations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s a gathering it has to be kept under 50 people and it has to be kept smart,\u201d Hizzoner said, adding, \u201cYou can celebrate from your home socially distant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monahan added that NYPD will break up any illegal house parties over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese house parties are so large it\u2019s almost impossible for us not to see them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re very large, speakers blaring. We will be out in force and we will have enough cops to go in these parties and break them up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monahan said he expects Brooklyn residents to celebrate, \u201cBut we\u2019re asking that they celebrate small, celebrate with their families, celebrate on their block.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who do not live in Brooklyn, there\u2019s absolutely no reason to come into Brooklyn from Jersey, from the Bronx,\u201d said Monahan. \u201cThere are no events to come see.\u201d<\/p>\n
