{"id":599662,"date":"2023-12-02T08:16:59","date_gmt":"2023-12-02T05:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/david-mamet-debates-why-he-believes-films-dont-need-dialogue-on-real-time\/"},"modified":"2023-12-02T08:16:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-02T05:16:59","slug":"david-mamet-debates-why-he-believes-films-dont-need-dialogue-on-real-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/david-mamet-debates-why-he-believes-films-dont-need-dialogue-on-real-time\/","title":{"rendered":"#David Mamet Debates Why He Believes Films Don\u2019t Need Dialogue on \u2018Real Time\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    David Mamet is standing by his belief that films don\u2019t need dialogue to be able to enjoy them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    On the latest episode of<em> Real Time<\/em>, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter and director debated the topic with Bill Maher after the host asked him, \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t want to go back to the silent <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>, would we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cYeah!\u201d Mamet responded. \u201cHere\u2019s why\u2026 We watch movies in translation, right? That are done. So we don\u2019t know what the dialogue is, right? We watch movies in translation that have subtitles, so we don\u2019t know what the dialogue is. Also, we\u2019ll watch a movie with the sound off on the airplane. We\u2019re watching the next guy\u2019s movie, you can\u2019t tell the dialogue, right? You have no idea, [and] you have no trouble following that movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Maher was quick to note that people don\u2019t have trouble following \u201c<em>some<\/em> movies.\u201d But Mamet quips in response, \u201cYeah, French movies you can follow it but who cares?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Later during their conversation, Maher told the screenwriter that one of his takeaways from his newest book, <em>Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood<\/em>, was that he cares \u201cmore than anybody I\u2019ve ever read about the audience and not boring them and making sure they care what comes in the next scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Mamet, who\u2019s known for his trademark rapid-fire dialogue, said it\u2019s \u201cbecause I prefer being a playwright to when I used to be a cab driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He explained that he learned a lot when he had a little theater company in a garage with Billy Macy and Joe Mantegna \u201ca million years ago,\u201d where they would put on plays at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt was the only way one can learn how to write a play is to sit with the audience and say, wait a second?\u201d Mamet said. \u201cJust like you and the comedy writers, right? You\u2019re writing for them [the audience], you aren\u2019t writing because some suit had a good idea. You realize you got their attention until you lose it. And if you put in an extra syllable in the joke, you lost their attention, and if you put in an extra joke, you can\u2019t get them back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    To that end, Maher questioned the playwright, \u2018So you would say plays <em>do<\/em> need dialogue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But Mamet noted that he writes dialogue because he\u2019s able to write dialogue, and that \u201cthe dialogue can only serve the purpose of interest in the audience. If it doesn\u2019t, I\u2019m back to driving a cab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He continued, \u201cYou learn this when you\u2019re working with an audience because you can feel, just like you can, when they lose their attention, when they start to drift. You go back and say, \u2018Guys, you know, I don\u2019t think this quite works, let\u2019s try it again.\u2019 So when you\u2019re writing for the audience, you learn to write a play and it\u2019s shameful because you say, \u2018Oh my God, I thought this was the best thing anybody ever wrote.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Elsewhere in the interview, Mamet said he wanted to prove to the <em>Real Time<\/em> audience why dialogue is not necessary in movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThe next time you\u2019re sitting in your living room watching TV. At some point, you might want to get up and use the facilities, right? \u2026 But here\u2019s my question: How do you know what point to do that?
