{"id":600030,"date":"2023-12-05T14:05:30","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T11:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/schools-ramp-up-battle-against-chronic-absenteeism\/"},"modified":"2023-12-05T14:05:30","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T11:05:30","slug":"schools-ramp-up-battle-against-chronic-absenteeism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/schools-ramp-up-battle-against-chronic-absenteeism\/","title":{"rendered":"#Schools ramp up battle against chronic absenteeism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/6530c3711f6c75.82119203.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Schools are stepping up efforts to combat chronic absenteeism, a major factor in plummeting test scores and other problems educators have faced with students since the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chronic absenteeism \u2014 commonly defined as missing more than 10 percent of school days \u2014 has affected millions of students and caught the attention of the White House, which has said the issue calls for an \u201call-hands-an-deck <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>There are numerous reasons students are missing school, including socio-emotional troubles, illness and poor academic performance itself \u2014 and administrators are tackling the problem in a variety of ways, too.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Dadisman, senior policy and research manager at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a Massachusetts Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> group focused on reducing poverty, said one strategy getting deployed is focusing on parental engagement in attendance. Such engagement correlates with lower absenteeism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Peter Bergman study, he was working with a district in West Virginia. And over the course of the study, the districts sent over 32,000 text messages for a total cost of about $63,\u201d Dadisman said. \u201cSo you\u2019re seeing a reduction in course failures by about 30 percent and attendance going up by 15 percent for an overall cost of $63 to the district.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo these are really cost-effective strategies for helping parents understand where their children are and then ultimately the idea, of course, is that when parents have real time information and accurate information, then they do something different with their kids at home,\u201d Dadisman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Students staying out of the classroom for so long is fueling a cycle of falling academic performance. Since the pandemic, children have seen decades of learning loss.<\/p>\n<p>The White House released data that \u201cobserved association between absenteeism and test scores is large enough to account for 16-27 percent of the overall test score declines in math, and 36-45 percent of the declines in reading.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, whether chronic absenteeism is a symptom or a cause \u2014 or both \u2014 of ongoing academic disruption, the evidence is clear that the road to recovery runs through the classroom,\u201d the White House said.<\/p>\n<p>Teaching Matters, a nonprofit that partners with schools with disadvantaged students, has been on the front lines of creating plans to combat chronic absenteeism. One of its approaches includes incorporating \u201cattendance teams\u201d at schools who work with setting up a system so parents are informed if their students aren\u2019t in school by a certain time; the teams also create \u201chomeroom challenges\u201d and other initiatives to incentivize students to come to school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, once the data is analyzed, they will focus on specific students and how to support them in their efforts to make it to school. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sort of like a roadmap, but after setting up the systems and structures, it\u2019s about implementing different tiers of attendance before like the big goal,\u201d said Manny Algarin, senior education consultant at Teaching Matters. \u201cI mean, our goal in schools is always kids coming to school on time.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, before schools shut down over COVID-19, chronic absenteeism was measured nationwide at 15 percent. It soared to 29 percent in 2022, according to the Return 2 Learn Tracker from the American Enterprise Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Locations with the highest rates of chronic absenteeism are in districts that have low-achieving schools, areas with high poverty rates and districts with a high minority population.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Low-achieving schools saw a 17 percentage point jump in chronic absenteeism from 2018 to 2022 and high poverty schools had a 16 percentage point increase in that time, according to the tracker.<\/p>\n<p>More holistic plans to address it have been seen in schools that\u00a0partner with City Year, a nonprofit that works with district leaders to provide them with better resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, the group has implemented \u201cstudent success coaches.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe research says that when students and kids are connected to at least one caring adult, they\u2019re likely to thrive <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly, emotionally, as well as academically. So that\u2019s our No. 1 priority as it relates to chronic absenteeism,\u201d said Quamid Francis, senior vice president and executive director for City Year New York. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Francis said getting families involved in the process is \u201cprofoundly impactful,\u201d while \u201ctutoring interventions\u201d help increase student confidence to be in the classroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we work with organizations like counseling schools with whom we subcontract, our students are provided with a full suite of services to ensure that they can focus on coming to school and feeling a sense of support and keep coming to school because they know that support will always be there,\u201d Francis said. \u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
