They\u2019ve <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jennifervanilla.github.io\/\">described their extraterrestrial alter ego<\/a> as \u201ca noun, a verb, and an adjective all at once\u201d; \u201can all-purpose, multi-use substance\u201d; and an \u201centrepreneurial fantasy vessel and avatar-cultivation experiment LARPed into reality.\u201d Glancing at these de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ors in 2023 inspires an automatic eye roll at post-post-modernism gone mad, but Vanilla\u2019s music justifies the nebulous phraseology surrounding it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The project\u2019s unlikely origin story may not ameliorate the skepticism inspired by Grant\u2019s lofty labels, but it does provide some depth to the persona: As <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jennifervanilla.bandcamp.com\/album\/castle-in-the-sky\">the story goes<\/a>, Vanilla is a \u201csexless humanoid alien\u201d with a \u201cquintessentially \u201980s name (the decade of [Grant\u2019s] birth)\u201d who \u201copened a portal to the eastern coast of the United States\u201d and used a \u201cmagical braid\u201d to entangle Grant\u2019s essence with their own.<\/p>\n<p>            The Jennifer Vanilla experiment has always used the \u201980s as its control group. 2017\u2019s <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jennifervanilla.bandcamp.com\/album\/this-is-jennifer-2\">This Is Jennifer<\/a><\/i>, the listening public\u2019s patchwork introduction to the phenomenon, was reflexively self-conscious of its debt to the decade, resulting in a flavorful but soupy meta-pastiche. <i>Castle In the Sky<\/i>, Vanilla\u2019s debut studio LP, still owes its tongue-in-cheek technicolor sheen to the false consumerist fantasies of the Reagan\/Bush era, but the character\u2019s scope is expanded here. Co-written and -produced by Grant and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abelsonlive\/\">Brian Abelson<\/a>, dropped in August, and deluxe-ified on December 1, the album is a confident defense of an apparently shaky concept. Its three new tracks \u2014 remixes by Jerry Paper, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/musclecars.nyc\/?hl=en\">musclecars<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/loveinjection.nyc\/?hl=en\">Love Injection<\/a> \u2014 are further proof of Vanilla\u2019s present-day staying power.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-257893\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/4TqqDq3Mx0GyG3VboZnq9C?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-257894\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            De facto opener \u201cTake Me For a Ride\u201d (following the aqueous intro \u201cJennifer Calling\u201d) draws heavily on the mid-\u201970s sci-fi adventures of Kraftwerk. And later track \u201cCool Loneliness\u201d jumps forward in time to the turn of the millennium, pulling from the sleepier end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>-hop spectrum (think Zero 7) and the sumptuous, sneakily off-center R&amp;B of Macy Gray. Mid-album cut \u201cHumility\u2019s Disease\u201d and the original record\u2019s closing, titular track take cues from no wave\u2019s more dance-floor friendly sector (Bush Tetras, Lizzy Mercier Descloux), mining its most uncanny sounds for songs that leave a metallic taste on the tongue. Elsewhere, early standout \u201cJennifer Pastoral\u201d and centerpiece \u201cBody Music\u201d pay homage to house pioneers like Frankie Knuckles and Alan King in a way that\u2019s clearly loving but too flighty to feel derivative.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cDancing is an expression of emotion \/ Often a kind of aspiration \/ Toward complete physical wellbeing and fulfillment,\u201d Vanilla says early on in the latter track, adopting an ebullient speaking voice that conveys tonality without actually containing it. But <i>Castles In the Sky<\/i> takes on the much trickier task of blending the era\u2019s capitalist excesses with its radical elements \u2014 art that arose as a response to the brutal injustices of austerity and imperialism masked as American exceptionalism \u2014 and projecting the whole mess onto our current technocratic dystopia. Jennifer Vanilla\u2019s dimension of origin is an eternal \u201980s, one in which the decade\u2019s false promises are suspended in midair like floating castles.
