Ron DeSantis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Haley has been on the rise, in part thanks to strong debate performances. She looks to be on the brink of supplanting DeSantis for second place.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis can\u2019t let that happen, as it would shatter one of the central planks of his candidacy \u2014 that he is the most viable alternative to former President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis and Haley are way behind Trump. The former president is 46 points\u00a0in the\u00a0clear in the national polling average maintained by data site FiveThirtyEight.<\/p>\n<p>Haley and DeSantis need to do more than gain an edge over each other at the debate Wednesday evening:\u00a0They need to find a true <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>-changing moment.<\/p>\n<p>That will be an uphill battle,\u00a0but it\u2019s not impossible.<\/p>\n<p>For a start, this will be the least cluttered debate stage so far. Only two other candidates have qualified and will participate \u2014 businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump, who would easily qualify, has declined to participate in any debates so far.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation was building Tuesday at the debate site, with rehearsals taking place under the lights on the big stage, aides to the candidates being given a walk-through of the post-debate spin room and the\u00a0network hosting the debate, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>Nation, broadcasting live from the venue.<\/p>\n<p>NewsNation and The Hill are both part of Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Group.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The debate will be held in the university\u2019s Frank Moody Music Building, which was still free for students to use Tuesday morning. The media hubbub was, for a while, intermingled with the sounds of tubas and violins.<\/p>\n<p>Come\u00a0Wednesday\u00a0evening, the focus will be solely on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what each candidate needs to do.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nikki_Haley\"><\/span>Nikki Haley<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Haley\u2019s supporters know her rise in the polls means she will be the main target for the other candidates Wednesday. But they also evince confidence in her ability to fire back.<\/p>\n<p>The most memorable moment of the last debate was Haley\u2019s curt dismissal of Ramaswamy as \u201cjust scum\u201d when he raised her daughter\u2019s use of TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Haley\u2019s platform will come under greater scrutiny now that she is on the cusp of becoming the main alternative to Trump.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Haley is vigorously supportive of Ukraine, arguing the U.S. has vital interests at stake in ensuring Kyiv repels Russia\u2019s invasion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She has also taken a more nuanced approach than some of her rivals on abortion, contending that a federal ban on the procedure \u2014 at least in the early stages of pregnancy \u2014 is politically unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p>There are significant numbers of GOP voters who are deeply skeptical of continuing aid to Ukraine and who hew to more absolutist anti-abortion positions.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Still, Haley aides contend that she has a lot of room to grow her support \u2014 and that the debate proves a great opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillions of Americans are still meeting Nikki Haley. She\u2019s gone into every debate making the case for why we need a new generation\u00a0of\u00a0conservative\u00a0leadership\u00a0who will leave the chaos of the past behind,\u201d Haley spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas told The Hill. \u201cVoters like her toughness and moral clarity, and that\u2019s why she\u2019s the only candidate on the rise.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ron_DeSantis\"><\/span>Ron DeSantis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>DeSantis delivered a more forceful performance in the third debate in Miami than he had done in previous encounters.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He also enjoyed an unusual warmup for the NewsNation clash last week,\u00a0when he debated\u00a0his liberal nemesis, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), on Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Still, DeSantis\u2019s campaign has been underwhelming to date. DeSantis World has also suffered internal problems, both in terms of staff layoffs from his actual campaign, and, just last weekend, several departures from the most high-profile super\u00a0PAC supporting him.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday,\u00a0DeSantis needs to land a direct hit on Haley \u2014 something he has not done in any debate so far. The other key question is how hard he will take aim at Trump, whose supporters he has tried in vain to pry over to his side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRon DeSantis dominated Gavin Newsom last week by vigorously articulating why his conservative record and vision for the future represents the best way forward for the country when contrasted with the Biden-Newsom agenda,\u201d DeSantis Communications Director Andrew Romeo told The Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now eager to go back to the primary and remind Republicans why Ron DeSantis is the only one on stage who can defeat Donald Trump for the nomination and Joe Biden for the White House to ensure those liberal policies are reversed and America\u2019s revival gets kicked off,\u201d Romeo added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vivek_Ramaswamy\"><\/span>Vivek Ramaswamy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ramaswamy is battling the perception that the bloom has come off his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He sparked excitement among a cohort of voters in the early stages of his quest, in part because he seemed so different \u2014 a young, wealthy entrepreneur who had never held political office.<\/p>\n<p>But Ramaswamy\u2019s persona has alienated some voters who see it as smug and fractious,\u00a0even as supporters see him as confident and fresh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy needs to be forceful enough to capture attention while not turning voters off.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a harder task than it sounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivek will tell Americans the truth no matter what: good, bad and downright ugly,\u201d promised Ramaswamy spokesperson\u00a0Tricia McLaughlin.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chris_Christie\"><\/span>Chris Christie<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Christie is betting all the chips on New Hampshire, where several recent polls have shown him in a creditable third place, ahead of DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>But how much good will that really do him in a party where most primary voters recoil from his aggressive blasts at Trump?<\/p>\n<p>Christie isn\u2019t going to change now \u2014 even if his approach could meet with some audience counterreaction in deep-red Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stage is small, which will increase the opportunity for very clear, direct engagement,\u201d senior Christie adviser Doug Meyer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Christie would likely take advantage of this, Meyer said, to highlight the contrast \u201cbetween how he deals with Donald Trump and how the rest of the field either enables him or ignores him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
