Moments before going live on Nov. 29, Canadian news<\/a> anchor Leslie Horton received an email from a viewer, who had watched her traffic report earlier that morning. <\/p>\n

The message read: \u201cCongratulations on your pregnancy. If you\u2019re going to wear old bus driver pants, you can expect emails like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horton, 59, was familiar with the sender. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s reached out several times over the years, and his intent is always to humiliate and hurt me,\u201d Horton, a broadcaster for Global News Calgary, tells TODAY.com. \u201cWe\u2019re not supposed to respond to trolls \u2014 so I had no plans to address it, but then the words just came out of my mouth. I had this visceral reaction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Horton began her on-air response by explaining that she was about to address an email that had just app<\/a>eared in her inbox. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I\u2019m not pregnant. I actually lost my uterus to cancer last year, and this is what women my age look like,” Horton, who has an 18-year-old daughter, said while speaking directly into the camera. “So, if it\u2019s offensive to you, that is unfortunate. Think about the emails you send.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Horton, the man who criticized her outfit choice, appears to be a \u201cregular viewer\u201d and was \u201cvery likely\u201d aware that she battled endometrial cancer. Horton was diagnosed in 2020, and shared the news with her audience. She also provided regular health updates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a radical hysterectomy, which means they don\u2019t just take your uterus, they take everything \u2014 and it immedia<\/a>tely impacts the shape of your body,\u201d Horton says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Horton says she \u201cdrew the line\u201d at the man\u2019s comment about how she looked in her pants. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I was responding to the pregnancy, no uterus, cancer thing,\u201d Horton says. \u201cOr maybe it\u2019s just the fact that I\u2019m tired female broadcasters \u2014 and women in general<\/a> \u2014 are being treated this way. And I would say it hit a nerve because I\u2019ve received thousands of messages from people \u2014 men and women \u2014 saying, \u2018Good for you. This is not right and it needs to stop.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

When Horton is asked if she will wear the pants again, she replies, \u201cdamn straight!”<\/p>\n

\u201cI will continue wearing the pants, and I will continue going on TV because you telling me I\u2019m old, ugly and fat doesn\u2019t change the way I feel about myself,\u201d Horton says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also believe that\u00a0your local news station should reflect your community, and guess what? There are other 59 year old women out there!\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Horton notes that the male anchors at Global News Calgary are \u201chorrified\u201d by the emails that their female colleagues receive on a daily basis. She says they don\u2019t get hateful messages about their appearance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After Global News shared Horton’s powerful response on X, formerly known as Twitter<\/a>, she was inundated with words of support. <\/p>\n

“Bravo. You handled this perfectly,” one person wrote.<\/p>\n

Echoed another, “This was possibly the most classy response to a classless email. I don\u2019t know how you kept your composure but we all benefit from taking this in. You\u2019re in a league of your own.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
