That\u2019s because flu season comes around in October. There\u2019s no exact date, just when it gets cold,\u201d One Medical provider Dr. Michael Richardson, told The Post. \u201cIt peaks between December and February and it can honestly last until May, it usually starts to beat out around March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes about two weeks for the immunity to kick in,\u201d advised Wong. \u201cSo it\u2019s highly recommended to get the flu shot before the season starts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone over the age of 6 months should get the shot. For those over 65, a higher-dose vaccination is available to bolster their weaker immune systems.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Should_I_get_a_flu_shot_this_year\"><\/span>Should I get a flu shot this year?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes. \u201cThis year it\u2019s highly important, because of the pandemic,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to prevent at least one deadly virus this year,\u201d said Richardson. \u201cThe health care system is already so strained with COVID. Having another epidemic on top of that is not going to help the health care system at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to keeping as many hospital beds open for COVID-19 patients who may need them, getting the flu can actually make you more vulnerable to the coronavirus. \u201cSay you recover from the flu, but a week later you get COVID-19. Your lungs are not fully recovered yet, and it may increase your risk of something much more serious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, asthma and COPD, it\u2019s especially important to get the shot.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_can_I_get_a_flu_shot\"><\/span>Where can I get a flu shot?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Flu shots are now widely available. You can get them at most doctor\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<p>At major pharmacies like CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens, you can usually get vaccinated without an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Urgent care facilities, like CityMD and One Medical, also offer the shot.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_do_flu_shots_cost_Can_I_get_one_for_free\"><\/span>How much do flu shots cost? Can I get one for free?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For those with insurance, in most cases, the flu shot will be free, no matter where you get it.<\/p>\n<p>For those without insurance, the cost of the vaccination varies by location but can range between $30 and $75.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_effective_are_flu_shots_and_how_long_do_they_last\"><\/span>How effective are flu shots and how long do they last?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<span>It lasts about six months,\u201d said Richardson, which is why it\u2019s important to get vaccinated now so you\u2019re covered during the peak months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are several strains of influenza that spread every year. \u201cThe flu vaccine is what health-care professionals think will be the top three or four strains, that\u2019s why some years it works well or not so well,\u201d said Richardson. \u201cWe don\u2019t know how well the flu vaccine is going to work this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you should be less keen to get it. \u201cIt\u2019s still possible that you can catch influenza after having had the flu shot. But if you have had the flu shot and you develop antibodies, you <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly get a much less severe course of the influenza,\u201d said Wong. \u201cYou will not get as sick\u201d as you would have without it in your system, he explained.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_get_the_flu_from_getting_a_flu_shot\"><\/span>Can you get the flu from getting a flu shot?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI cannot say this enough: The flu shot cannot give you the flu,\u201d said Richardson. \u201cThe flu vaccine itself doesn\u2019t have any live virus to it, so it can\u2019t give you the flu.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_possible_side_effects_of_the_flu_shot\"><\/span>What are the possible side effects of the flu shot?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>However, some people will feel \u201cflu-like\u201d symptoms like fatigue and spike a small fever for about two days after they are vaccinated. This is normal \u2014 and again, this doesn\u2019t mean they have the flu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is your body responding to a foreign substance and sort of reacting to what it\u2019s received,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n<p>Richardson said some people will develop a little bit of redness at the injection site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span>The majority of people who get it are fine,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_the_coronavirus_differ_from_the_flu\"><\/span>How does the coronavirus differ from the flu?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Confusingly, there are many similarities between the coronavirus and the flu. Both are respiratory viruses that spread through droplets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe classic symptoms for flu are fever, body aches, cough and other repository symptoms like shortness of breath,\u201d explained Richardson. \u201cCOVID has all of those and more, like sore throat, rashes, we\u2019ve seen significant strain on the heart, the lungs, the brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also possible to get the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>If you start experiencing flu or coronavirus symptoms, it\u2019s important to contact your doctor, self-isolate and wear a mask at home.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_safe_to_visit_a_doctors_office_to_get_the_flu_shot\"><\/span>Is it safe to visit a doctor\u2019s office to get the flu shot?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to head to a health-care facility. \u201cHospitals and primary care offices are some of the safest spaces,\u201d said Richardson. \u201cBecause we\u2019re making sure that we\u2019re consistently following infectious disease protocols and social distancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter where you get vaccinated, make sure your provider is practicing social distancing and requiring people to wear masks, added Richardson. \u201cDo your own risk assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_you_protect_yourself_from_the_flu\"><\/span>How can you protect yourself from the flu?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can stay safe from the flu the same ways in which you\u2019re protecting yourself from the coronavirus. \u201c<span>If you\u2019re able to social distance, wash hands, cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough, those are the preventions from influenza,\u201d said Wong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a best-case scenario, reducing the flu and COVID through the same process,\u201d said Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t lean on these measures alone, though, added Wong. \u201cIt\u2019s still important to get yourself protected as much as you can.
