Since Elon Musk\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takeover of Twitter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there has been huge public outcry about his actions and decisions, but the platform remains relevant. And, most recently, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2023\/oct\/17\/bandcamp-lays-off-half-its-staff-after-buyout-by-songtradr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandcamp was bought by Songtradr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which swiftly laid off 50% of its staff. But guess what? It\u2019s still by far-and-away the leader in its category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This points to an environment where big platforms can act in ways swathes of people find distasteful, yet still remain in dominant positions. The more things change, the more they stay the same. For companies trying to upend this hegemony and Silicon Valley\u2019s grip on the tech world, it could feel disheartening.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here at TNW we had some questions: is all this necessarily true? Are certain sites really too big to fail? And could smaller companies use burgeoning tech like decentralisation to fight back against the might of Silicon Valley?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we\u2019re going to find out. Think of it like an online record store where artists can sell their music and merchandise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/is-bandcamp-as-we-know-it-over\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Widely beloved by fans and musicians alike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Bandcamp has a reputation for being artist-friendly. It offers good cuts on sales and runs schemes like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/daily.bandcamp.com\/features\/bandcamp-fridays-update\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bandcamp Friday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it waives commission fees. Long story short, Bandcamp is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/therectangle.substack.com\/p\/look-how-they-massacred-bandcamp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the few places<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this current music environment where artists can actually make some money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet like all good things on the internet, it couldn\u2019t last. The platform was <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/bandcamp-epic-games-acquisition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchased by Epic Games in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before being bought up by Songtradr this year. After getting rid of a gamut of staff, it became clear to many users that the days of Bandcamp as an artist-first haven <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/therectangle.substack.com\/p\/look-how-they-massacred-bandcamp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are coming to a close<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, the platform is ripe for a competitor. Its audience consists of people who value independence as a concept and it has a user base <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/expandedramblings.com\/index.php\/bandcamp\/#google_vignette\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the tens of millions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than billions. Yet that hasn\u2019t h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To dig into the reasons, I got in touch with one of these competitor platforms, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/artcore.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the just launched London-based Artcore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In many ways, it offers a broadly comparable service to Bandcamp: a place to sell music with relatively manageable commissions fees (20% in this case).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke with Tom Burnell, Artcore\u2019s founder, about the challenges of trying to take on a much bigger platform. He tells me that \u201cbuilding any startup is a challenge,\u201d but he wouldn\u2019t be go into further detail about their battle with Bandcamp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a request, Burnell didn\u2019t share users numbers or sales figures, but a quick check on <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pro.similarweb.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarweb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is only a rough estimate), put Artcore\u2019s visitors to its website at around 30,000 in October of this year. While the site is growing, it\u2019s not going to be challenging Bandcamp any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question then is why? What would need to happen for Artcore and other such challenger platforms to usurp the current status quo?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"David_vs_Goliath_A_tech_tale\"><\/span><strong>David vs. Goliath: A tech tale<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSmaller companies and startups have to first cut through the noise to raise awareness of their offering, which takes time, effort, and considerable resources,\u201d Matt Iliffe, CEO of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bynd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells me. Beyond has worked with businesses including Google, Snap, and YouTube in order to optimise product experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside this, Iliffe believes many smaller companies fail to compete is down to public perception. There\u2019s \u201csafety in established platforms,\u201d he tells me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectively, better the devil you know than the one you don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This explains why competitors to the likes of Twitter\/X, Facebook, and Bandcamp struggle to gain traction: they need to spend huge amounts of money to capture an audience that\u2019d rather keep using a product they\u2019re familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question, then, is beyond spending billions of euros, how can a smaller company compete with the might of established bodies?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA new platform must be ten times better than the one it hopes to win users from. Or be radically new,\u201d Nicki Sprinz, Global MD of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ustwo.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ustwo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells me. Their business helps create and design new products, something it\u2019s done with the<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onepeloton.com\/bike\/lanebreak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Peloton Lanebreak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebodycoach.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Body Coach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is, Sprinz explains, that huge tech companies are \u201ctoo big to fail\u201d when the platforms trying to compete with them do a similar thing with a near identical business model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this means is a service attempting to be another version of Twitter or Bandcamp won\u2019t succeed. It needs to look beyond being a copycat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s hope: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> is today\u2019s agent of creative destruction,\u201d Sprinz says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smaller companies can challenge huge business, but they need to be doing something noticeably different in order to take away market share, whether that\u2019s offering a new user experience or utilising the latest technological advancements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes sense: Facebook didn\u2019t upend MySpace by copying it, it did so by creating something that was noticeably different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now one of the technologies that\u2019s offering a way of doing things differently is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decentralisation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The question is whether it could be the remedy for smaller businesses to fight back against the biggest players?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_decentralisation_question\"><\/span><strong>The decentralisation question<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out, I spoke with Martina Larkin, CEO of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projectliberty.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Liberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a body <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6235171\/frank-mccourt-project-liberty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spearheaded by billionaire Frank McCourt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build a new, decentralised internet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larkin tells me that the goal of decentralisation is to take \u201cthe power and control of social media out of the hands of a few platform providers and [give] it to users and developers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefit of these types of systems is they give people ownership over their information, meaning they can \u201ctake their data such as their followers from one app to another\u201d while also connecting with people across other apps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I asked why this shift to decentralised platforms hasn\u2019t happened yet, and Larkin says that the technology to create these sorts of systems \u2014 such as blockchain \u2014 is only just maturing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are increasingly uneasy about the way social media influences and manipulates their online presence, especially how big tech controls their data,\u201d she says, \u201cdecentralised technology systems provide the opportunity for companies to both operate sustainably and provide a fair and equitable economic value to all participants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_simple_life\"><\/span>The simple life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are excellent points and is the way I hope platforms shift in the future, but there remain two broad issues for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is ease. It\u2019s no coincidence that Apple has become the biggest company in the world when it could broadly sum up its approach as making previously fiddly things easy. Fundamentally, that\u2019s what people want: a simple life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While decentralised networks like Mastodon and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/11\/16\/23964400\/bluesky-public-web-access-federated-2-million-users\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bluesky are growing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are nowhere near as user-friendly as Twitter. Until they can adequately solve that complexity \u2014 which may never be entirely the case \u2014 I feel that huge amounts of the public will not opt in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second point is around payments. Decentralisation may work for social media, but when there\u2019s a platform like Bandcamp on which money is swapping hands, most people would prefer there to be a reliable middle figure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You only need to look at how cryptocurrency has \u2014 so far at least \u2014 failed to become a de facto payment method despite huge pushes. There\u2019s reliability in a middle man, and this is especially true when it comes to money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t matter whether these beliefs are logical, it\u2019s simply the state we\u2019re in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Power_from_the_platforms\"><\/span><strong>Power from the platforms<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we\u2019ve discovered isn\u2019t rocket <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>: it is not easy to dislodge pre-existing online platforms with large user bases. In fact, if you\u2019re trying to do pretty much the same thing as them, it\u2019s nigh-on impossible to overcome that market share and attract the product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gives huge companies a certain amount of licence to do whatever the hell they want, users be damned. I\u2019m certain there is a tipping point somewhere, but the fact Facebook hasn\u2019t already found it suggests it\u2019s pretty dark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t get disheartened \u2014 this doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s no hope for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For upstart platforms to alter the current system, the key is they need to do something different. Whether that\u2019s offering a new way of engaging with content (think of how TikTok reimagined YouTube) or incorporating a burgeoning technology like decentralisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking to compete with Instagram or Twitter or Bandcamp isn\u2019t going to work. Companies need to look beyond them, to think of a new way of delivering what those platforms are striving to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet this isn\u2019t all, as simplicity and ease-of-use is king. New platforms need to show people that it is not only much better than the previous one, but it\u2019s also just as easy to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without that?
