\n The white George Washington University professor who on Thursday admitted she lied about being black for years only did so after being found out, a friend claimed.<\/p>\n

Hari Ziyad, a black author and screenwriter, posted a series<\/a> of tweets calling Jessica Krug \u201ca friend up until this morning\u201d when Krug app<\/a>arently called Ziyad to confess the falsehoods she detailed in a Medium post titled \u201cThe Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t do it out of benevolence,\u201d Ziyad wrote. \u201cShe did it because she had been found out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Yomaira Figueroa, an associate professor of Afro Diaspora Studies at Michigan State University, also said Krug only came forward after being confronted.<\/p>\n

\u201cKrug got ahead of the story because she was caught & she knew the clock was ticking bec folks started to confront her & ask questions,\u201d Figueroa wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not believe for one second that she would have come out with the truth on her own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Figueroa said a junior scholar, who is black and latina, approached two senior scholars with her concerns and helped conduct research to prove that Krug had been lying about her identity.<\/p>\n

They then reached out to other senior scholars and institutions with the evidence, Figueroa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no witch hunt, but there was a need to draw the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her Medium post, Krug, 38, wrote that she had previously considered telling the truth, but never found the strength. She didn\u2019t state a reason for coming forward on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Figueroa wrote that she felt \u201clucky\u201d that she didn\u2019t know Krug personally because, \u201cshe gaslit folks I know, was openly racist, & manipulated so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his tweets, Ziyad, the editor in chief of the online publication RaceBaitr, wrote that he had defended Krug and her work \u201cdespite warnings from Black friends, from those who said she wasn\u2019t Black enough even if they could accept that she was Black, and from my own mind and body.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI always knew there was something off,\u201d Ziyad wrote. \u201cIt was in her persistent negativity and jealousy, her always needing to prove her authenticity at the expense of everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither Krug, nor GW, where she is an associate professor of history, immediately returned requests for comment from The Post. Ziyad and Figueroa also did not immediately return emails.<\/p>\n
