But<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0building a world-leading business is exactly what Latvia\u2019s Printful did. In 2021, the on-demand printing startup was valued at <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.printful.com\/uk\/news\/printful-valued-at-1-billion-and-raises-130-million-from-investors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over $1 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it the country\u2019s first-ever unicorn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reach the local landmark, Printful took an international route. But rather than focus on its home continent of Europe, the company set its sights on the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to make something big \u2014 and to this day, there is no bigger market than the United States for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> companies,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davis Siksnans, the co-founder and former CEO of Printful, told TNW at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techchill.co\/\">TechChill<\/a> conference in Riga, Latvia, earlier this year.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re glad that we had some people from Latvia who were willing to uproot themselves and move to the United States and work there on the ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">TNW Conference 2024 &#8211; Calling all Startups to join on June 20-21<\/p>\n<p>Showcase your startup in front of investors, change-makers and potential customers with our curated Startup packages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a move that Hussein Kanji wants more European entrepreneurs to make. As a partner at <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoxtonventures.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoxton Ventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a VC investor based in London, Kanji has backed some of the continent\u2019s most successful startups, including the unicorns Deliveroo and Darktrace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His firm selects these businesses because it believes they can become c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ategory-defining companies. To reach this level, Kanji wants more founders to look stateside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you\u2019ve built something and validated that it\u2019s actually good relative to its peers, you should be focused on the US market as early as possible \u2014 you\u2019re going to build a bigger company,\u201d Kanji told TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Stanford University graduate who\u2019s worked for both startups\u00a0and tech giants in the United States, Kanji has extensive experience with the rewards on offer in the country. He also has the data to substantiate his views. It\u2019s got more customers, more capital, and more talent. There\u2019s also the powerful network effects that fizzle across Silicon Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The allure was irresistible for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Printful. In classic startup style, the company\u2019s founders built their early business from a garage in California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe leveraged a physical presence in the United States, which gave us im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te credibility with the customers there,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siksnans <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move soon paid off. After four years of focusing on the US, Printful reached $46mn in revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, not everyone is willing to migrate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many European founders prefer to stay closer to home for familial, social, or patriotic reasons. Others are concerned about the risks of relocating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US is way more expensive, way more competitive, and you\u2019re way more likely to fail\u2026 but if you win, you win so much bigger,\u201d Kanji said. \u201cAnd we don\u2019t care so much about the failure side \u2014 we care about the winning side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Risk_and_reward\"><\/span>Risk and reward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies from larger countries are often reluctant to cross the Atlantic because they\u2019re confident that their home market is already big enough. Startups from smaller countries, meanwhile, may prefer to target another European nation for its early European expansion. Geographical proximity, cultural connections, and personal relationships can make the local moves more alluring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When these arguments are made to Kanji, he advises them to start in the US and then return to Europe when they\u2019re on a winning streak. The majority of tech workers in the region are foreign-born, and around half of its \u2018unicorn\u2019 startups were founded by immigrants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a place that\u2019s accustomed to power players suddenly emerging from out of nowhere. When Mark Zuckerberg was creating a creepy hot or not clone at Harvard, who could have predicted that he would soon transform the online world?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such developments are hard to predict, which has encouraged the Valley to welcome new people and ideas. The cofounder of S<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>e, for instance, moved there when he was still a teenager after his company had failed to draw financial support in his home country of Ireland. Nine years later, he was the youngest self-made billionaire in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Valley is very accommodating towards new stuff \u2014 and the new stuff doesn\u2019t have to just be American,\u201d Kanji said. \u201cIt could be Swedish, it could be Estonian \u2014\u00a0but you have to be physically there, building those networks and relationships. If you\u2019re far away, it\u2019s a little less accommodating, because there\u2019s still this bias in the Bay Area that the good stuff gravitates to the Bay Area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taking_the_first_steps\"><\/span><strong>Taking the first steps<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanji doesn\u2019t advise leaving Europe as soon as an idea emerges. Startups first need to establish their initial product market fit, determine its worth, and get feedback. Once the value has been established, the founder can move to the US. The rest of the team, however, is often better built at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One drawback of the US is the high salaries of tech workers. There are also always bigger companies who want to poach the top talent. In Europe, these costs and risks are lower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Printful, the best balance was dividing roles across regions. While the startup\u2019s founders established a presence in the US, they built their team of developers, designers, and marketers in their home region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery quickly, we learned that even though the target market was the United States, we didn\u2019t necessarily need all the teams on the grounds in the US, because we have a good selection of talent here in Latvia,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siksnans said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Printful founder, however, remained in the US. It\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach that has often yielded impressive results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phill Robinson, a former Salesforce CMO and CEO of Dutch software giant Exact, has also experienced the benefits. Robinson recently returned to his home country of the UK to found the startup platform <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boardwave.org\/\">Boardwave<\/a>, which aims to replicate Silicon Valley\u2019s network effects in Europe. Yet he acknowledges that startups targeting the US still need a leader on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to have your founder move to the States, or a significant part of your management team,\u201d Robinson told TNW. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to understand the product market fit, because it might be slightly different.
