{"id":600819,"date":"2023-12-12T06:35:48","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T03:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/jury-decides-against-googles-app-store-in-antitrust-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2023-12-12T06:35:48","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T03:35:48","slug":"jury-decides-against-googles-app-store-in-antitrust-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/jury-decides-against-googles-app-store-in-antitrust-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"#Jury decides against Google\u2019s app store in antitrust lawsuit\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/64ff62f444db08.01854109-e1695315970209.jpeg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A federal jury in California sided with \u201cFortnite\u201d maker Epic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>s in the company\u2019s antitrust lawsuit against Google\u2019s Android <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a> Store, finding the store violated antitrust laws and was illegally protected from competition. <\/p>\n<p>The jury in San Diego reached a unanimous verdict on Monday night after nearly three hours of deliberation following a weeks-long trial over the payment system of Google\u2019s Play Store, which is used by hundreds of millions of people to download apps for smartphones that use Google\u2019s Android software. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The jury <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.364325\/gov.uscourts.cand.364325.606.0.pdf\">found <\/a>for Epic Games on all 11 questions it was asked to evaluate, including over the existence of an antitrust market, Google\u2019s anticompetitive conduct, and if Google\u2019s violation of antitrust laws injured Epic Games. <\/p>\n<p>The verdict caps off a three-year legal battle between Epic Games and Google after the game developing company accused Google of shielding its Play Store from competition to continue making billions in profits, The Associated Press <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-epic-games-antitrust-trial-android-app-store-dd6b26be7447b5ff8cc0d20a4d01b6b4\">reported.<\/a> Google collects a commission anywhere from 15 percent to 30 percent on digital purchases within apps, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> wire said.  <\/p>\n<p>Google has argued the commissions help make up for the over $40 billion the company has spent to build the Android software which it began giving to manufacturers in 2007 to compete with Apple\u2019s iPhone, the AP reported. <\/p>\n<p>Google lawyer Jonathan Kravis told the court Android phones cannot compete against the iPhone \u201cwithout a great App Store on them,\u201d and that \u201cthe competition between the app stores is tied to the competition between the phones,\u201d per The AP. <\/p>\n<p>In a similar lawsuit brought against Apple by Epic Games in 2021, a judge ruled in Apple\u2019s favor, ruling the tech giant is not an illegal monopoly, but rather has engaged in illegal anti-competitive conduct. Like Google, Apple collects a commission on payments made within apps. <\/p>\n<p>Epic CEO Tim Sweeney celebrated the victory, writing on X, formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, \u201cVictory over Google!\u201d and called the verdict a \u201cwin for all app developers and consumers around the world,\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epicgames.com\/site\/en-US\/news\/epic-v-google-trial-verdict-a-win-for-all-developers\"> in a company memo.<\/a> <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt [the verdict] proves that Google\u2019s app store practices are illegal and they abuse their monopoly to extract exorbitant fees, stifle competition and reduce innovation,\u201d Sweeney wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s verdict could have wide-reaching implications for app store rules in the future where developers could see greater control over the distribution of their apps and the profits collected from them, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/google-epic-games-face-off-app-antitrust-trial-nears-end-2023-12-11\/\">Reuters reported. <\/a>This could also see Google lose billions in annual profit from Play Store commissions. <\/p>\n<p>In a statement shared with The Hill, Wilson White, Google\u2019s vice president of government affairs and public policy, said the company is planning to appeal the verdict. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAndroid and Google Play provide more choice and openness than any other major mobile platform.
