\n President Trump knows how to troll Democrats \u2014 witness his declaration that he will cut federal funds for New York City along with three other \u201clawless\u201d cities.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an empty threat, difficult if not impossible to do \u2014 and unwise as well. It would be obnoxious if left unaddressed.<\/p>\n

But Gov. Cuomo felt the need to go overboard.<\/p>\n

The prez has ordered his minions to see what cuts they can make in funds for the Big App<\/a>le as well as for Seattle, Washington, DC and Portland, Ore. Trump was making the valid point that Portland\u2019s Mayor Ted Wheeler and the rest deserve much of the blame for what\u2019s happened to their towns: Mobs don\u2019t stop looting, burning, etc. until the authorities make them stop; they just keep going until there\u2019s nothing left to burn.<\/p>\n

But how much cash Trump can legally withhold is an open question: Though many programs allow for some executive discretion, it seems unlikely the city could lose $7 bill\u00adion, the number floated. And any move on his part is sure to face a legal challenge.<\/p>\n

Yet Trump\u2019s real goal was to get an over-the-top response, and boy did local pols deliver.<\/p>\n

They declared that taking \u201ctheir\u201d money is the ultimate crime against humanity. Cuomo really lost it \u2014 holding an emergency press conference Wednesday night to call out the president less than an hour after Trump made his threat.<\/p>\n

The governor seemed truly upset, launching into a host of personal attacks on the president, with \u201ctabloid clown\u201d being among the nicer comments. (Though, to be fair, Trump was mean to gov-brother Chris earlier in the day, even calling him \u201cFredo\u201d again.)<\/p>\n

But it was Cuomo\u2019s opening remarks that really seemed unhinged: \u201cHe better have an army if he thinks he\u2019s gonna walk down the street in New York. New Yorkers don\u2019t want to have anything to do with him,\u201d the gov said. And: \u201cHe can\u2019t have enough bodyguards to walk through New York City, people don\u2019t want to have anything to do with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, Cuomo basically admitted that New York is as \u201clawless\u201d as Trump charged. We know it\u2019s not what a Queens guy wants to hear, Governor, but you\u2019re really better off not trying to beat Trump at his own game<\/a>.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
