The shooting prompted a renewed debate about gun control in the U.S. and prompted proposals for background checks and semi-automatic firearm bans.<\/p>\n<p>Vice President Kamala Harris posted online saying in the years since the elementary school shooting, gun violence has become the number one killer of U.S. children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we must call on Congress and state legislators to take action. Ban assault weapons, make background checks universal, and enact red flag laws,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VP\/status\/1735368902924791984?s=20\">her post said<\/a>. \u201cThese solutions are reasonable, they are necessary, and they will save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also commemorated the anniversary and promoted Democrats\u2019 attempts to pass an assault weapons ban, which Republicans blocked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t stop working to pass it,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1735298577801392526?s=20\">his X post said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said the day remains \u201cseared in our memories, sealed by tragedy &amp; trauma, the pain still raw &amp; real.\u201d The victims of the shooting inspire the continuous \u201ccall to action against gun violence,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenBlumenthal\/status\/1735359400691302708?s=20\">he posted online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Fellow Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy (D) posted online to honor the victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI beg you \u2013 commit yourself to the cause of creating a nation where this never ever h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens again,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1735287163749535752?s=20\">Murphy posted<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSanders\/status\/1735477989566025846?s=20\">demanded Congress<\/a> \u201ctake on the NRA and pass life-saving gun safety legislation NOW.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In a press conference Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) criticized Congress for its inability to pass reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country said \u2018We must never allow it to happen again,\u2019\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USATODAY\/status\/1735405881708134551?s=20\">Jeffries said.<\/a> \u201cBut this year alone, there have been 635 mass shootings in the United States of America and more than 40,000 Americans have lost their lives due to gun violence in 2023 alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) similarly criticized Congress\u2019 lack of action in a post online.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIn the years since the massacre, survivors and families have turned anguish into action \u2013 demanding an end to the gun violence crisis,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerPelosi\/status\/1735392671592513811?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerPelosi\/status\/1735392671592513811?s=20\">Pelosi said.<\/a> \u201cRepublicans must join Democrats to enact gun violence prevention legislation that will save lives and finally end this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) said in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJoeCourtney\/status\/1735315253741629782?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJoeCourtney\/status\/1735315253741629782?s=20\">a post online<\/a> that he continues to be \u201cinspired by the courageous advocacy\u201d of the families and survivors. The Safer Communities Act passed in 2022 \u201cwas a breakthrough\u201d but work must continue to pass \u201ccomprehensive gun safety legislation in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Connecticut Rep. John Larson (D) said there have been thousands of mass shootings since 2012 and \u201cCongress continues to fail\u201d at passing common-sense legislation. \u201cThe time for action is now!\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJohnLarson\/status\/1735312272103207025?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJohnLarson\/status\/1735312272103207025?s=20\">he said online<\/a>. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJahanaHayes\/status\/1735366671479521777?s=20\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJahanaHayes\/status\/1735366671479521777?s=20\">addressed lawmakers<\/a> Thursday, asking them \u201cto remember your commitment to the people we serve. I ask that we work together to make our schools and our communities safe, to ensure tragedies like Sandy Hook Elementary School are a thing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
