\n After a five-month wait, Meta\u2019s latest social media<\/a> app<\/a> Threads is now available to people living in the European Union.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday we\u2019re opening Threads to more countries in Europe. Welcome everyone,\u201d wrote Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

Threads is Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s answer to X, formerly Twitter, which has been steadily <\/span>loosing users<\/span><\/a> since Elon Musk took over last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The social media app, which can only be accessed through Instagram, basically piggybacked off the many controversies at X. The short-text platform works in much the same way as its competitor. <\/span>From the home section you can interact with other users\u2019 posts, and by using the search icon, you can locate other Threads users.<\/span><\/p>\n

To coincide with yesterday\u2019s launch, Meta is giving users in the EU the ability to browse Threads without needing a profile. Actually posting or interacting with content will still require an Instagram account, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Threads hit 100 million sign-ups less than a week after its July debut which saw it available in over 100 countries, including the UK. This made it the fastest growing online platform in history, dethroning ChatGPT, which took two months to reach the same number of users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These record numbers were achieved despite the fact that Threads wasn\u2019t rolled out in the EU. Ireland\u2019s Data Protection Commission (DPC) <\/span>blocked Threads from<\/span> EU app stores shortly before its release.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new platform pulls sensitive data from Instagram, including behavioural and advertising information, which risks breaching EU privacy laws, said the authority.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many<\/span> speculated<\/span><\/a> the delay was due to the incoming <\/span>Digital Markets Act<\/span>, which addresses a variety of big tech privacy concerns \u2014 including sharing content across platforms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Meta hasn\u2019t named the law directly, Instagram head Adam Mosseri blamed the delay on \u201cthe complexities with complying with some of the laws coming into effect next year.\u201d Companies like Meta, designated as \u201c<\/span>gatekeepers<\/span>\u201d under the DMA, have until March 2024 to comply with its requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zuckerberg <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> in October that Threads had just under 100 million monthly active users, adding that he thinks it could reach as many as one billion in a few years. <\/span>The EU release is Threads\u2019 biggest expansion since its launch, and opens up some half a billion potential new users to the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

The release comes amid further turmoil at Elon Musk\u2019s X. <\/span>\u00a0Following alleged antisemitic comments by Mussk, numerous advertisers, including Apple, Disney, and IBM have paused their ad spending on the platform. The tech tycoon later <\/span>went on to say<\/span><\/a> that anyone trying to \u201cblackmail\u201d him over advertising money could \u201cgo f**k themselves.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
