Matthew Perry<\/strong>\u2018s death is the tragedy that keeps on taking.<\/p>\n

After the shock of learning in the medical examiner\u2019s report last week that the cause of death was \u201cthe acute effects of ketamine,\u201d we were struck once again by a great sadness. This was not just about losing the\u00a0Friends<\/em> star\u2019s comic genius \u2014 but about the reminder no matter how happ<\/a>y he made us, Matthew Perry never seemed to be able to find contentment himself.<\/p>\n

And a friend of his from his early days confirmed it with a really heartbreaking quote. That friend?\u00a0George Clooney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ocean\u2019s 11<\/em> star opened up to\u00a0Deadline<\/em> about the wild ride of fame that began when\u00a0Friends<\/em> and\u00a0ER<\/em> premiered the same week in September 1994. The shows shot next door to one another on the\u00a0Warner Bros<\/strong> lot, so the whole meteoric rise was together. That meant seeing Matty\u2019s journey up close.<\/p>\n

And Clooney knew the comedy star even before that. He recalled:<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew Matt when he was 16 years old. We used to play paddle tennis together. He\u2019s about 10 years younger than me. And he was a great, funny, funny, funny kid. He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind<\/strong> and Grant Heslov<\/strong>, was, \u2018I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth.’\u201d<\/p>\n

But that isn\u2019t what happened. Oh, he got a sitcom alright! As George put it, \u201che got on probably one of the best ever.\u201d But it didn\u2019t fill that hole inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t happy. It didn\u2019t bring him joy or happiness or peace. And watching that go on on the lot \u2014 we were at Warner Bros, we were there right next to each other \u2014 it was hard to watch because we didn\u2019t know what was going through him. We just knew that he wasn\u2019t happy and I had no idea he was doing what, 12 Vicodin a day and all the stuff he talked about, all that heartbreaking stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Clooney saw the lesson to be learned in that, even then \u2014 but moreso now.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn\u2019t just automatically bring you happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So true. Really important to remember, if you think getting that one thing, that one promotion, that one car, even that one romantic partner, is going to make you happy? It won\u2019t. You have to be OK with yourself, because that\u2019s the one person who\u2019s going to be with you the entire ride.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re just so heartbroken to know Matthew Perry, who gave so many such joy, wasn\u2019t OK. Even to the end, he wasn\u2019t OK. So sad\u2026<\/p>\n
