That\u2019s just one of the many highlights of\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2018s new oral history of the first year of Late Night with Conan O\u2019Brien<\/em>, in which various interviews track the humble beginnings of one of the best late night talk show hosts of all time.<\/p>\n

Our fave quote is from the\u00a0Friends<\/em> star, who was actually Conan\u2019s girlfriend at the time took over hosting\u00a0Late Night<\/em> when\u00a0David Letterman<\/strong> famously quit and headed to rival network\u00a0CBS<\/strong>. She told the carrot-topped comic:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re trying to replace David Letterman. No one replaces David Letterman. You\u2019re<\/em> no one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ha! Telling a guy trying to be a TV star that he\u2019s \u201cno one\u201d sounds pretty harsh, like tough love. But it wasn\u2019t, it was genius!<\/p>\n

See, she meant it as a compliment. She was saying the person who won over viewers after Letterman\u2019s exit \u201ccan\u2019t be anybody that an audience would know.\u201d It had to be a dark horse \u2014 well, a pale horse \u2014 coming from out of nowhere. And she was right! Tons of folks grew up on the zany antics of Conan like the previous generation had grown up with Letterman. He was a huge hit with college students and developed the same kind of loyal but small following that his predecessor had begun with.<\/p>\n
