Voters in Idaho, Colorado and Montana could decide on\u00a0ballot\u00a0measures that would change the way their primaries are conducted. In Florida, efforts are underway to put forward a measure that would make school\u00a0board elections partisan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Ballot\u00a0measures have grown in importance in recent years, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling last summer to overturn Roe v. Wade. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are five\u00a0ballot\u00a0measures to watch for in 2024:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Abortion_ballot_measures\"><\/span>Abortion\u00a0ballot\u00a0measures\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Abortion rights advocates are looking to amend state constitutions\u00a0to enshrine abortion protections\u00a0in Florida, Arizona, Missouri, South Dakota\u00a0and New York, among others. <\/p>\n<p>Although the measures differ in language and potential scope, they join a growing list of initiatives that address abortion access at the state level following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn the federal right to abortion last year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Arizona, for example, abortion rights advocates are looking to change the state Constitution\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.arizona.vote\/electioninfo\/assets\/47\/0\/BallotMeasures\/I-05-2024%20Arizona%20for%20Abortion%20Access.pdf\">to note that<\/a>\u00a0\u201cevery individual has a fundamental right to abortion\u201d and block the state from anything that \u201cdenies, restricts or interferes with that right before fetal viability unless justified by a compelling state interest that is achieved by the least restrictive means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in South Dakota, advocates are looking to amend the state Constitution to block the state from being able to regulate abortion before the end of the first trimester.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The measure would allow the state to regulate abortion between the end of the first trimester and the end of the second trimester \u201conly in ways that are reasonably related to the physical health of the pregnant woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the end of the second trimester, the State may regulate or prohibit abortion, except when abortion is necessary, in the medical judgment of the woman\u2019s physician, to preserve the life or health of the pregnant woman,\u201d the proposed constitutional amendment finishes saying.<\/p>\n<p>The measures come against the backdrop of a handful of wins Democrats and abortion rights advocates have seen at the\u00a0ballot\u00a0box. The first state to vote on abortion rights since the fall of Roe, Kansas rejected a\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure last year that would have given the state Legislature the authority to ban the medical procedure. Ohio became the latest state this year to enshrine abortion protections into its constitution \u2014 a major feat for Democrats and advocates in a state that has leaned red.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Open_primaries\"><\/span>Open primaries\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Voters in a handful of states could decide to change their election process to create open primaries. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A group in Arizona called Make Elections Fair PAC is looking to place a\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure before voters that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.arizona.vote\/electioninfo\/assets\/47\/0\/BallotMeasures\/I-14-2024%20Make%20Elections%20Fair%20Arizona.pdf\">would amend the state Constitution<\/a>\u00a0to, in part, require all candidates running for the same office to compete under one primary \u2014 meaning Republican and Democratic candidates would <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear under the same\u00a0ballot. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In South Dakota, a group called South Dakota Open Primaries\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sdsos.gov\/elections-voting\/upcoming-elections\/assets\/2024%20BQ\/2024CAOpenPrimaryPetition.pdf\">is looking to amend<\/a>\u00a0the state Constitution that would require particular candidates\u00a0\u2014 those running for governor, Senate, House, a legislative office\u00a0or county office \u2014 to all run under one\u00a0ballot\u00a0for those particular offices, with the top two vote-getters competing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The group Montanans for Election Reform, meanwhile,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sosmt.gov\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?juwpfisadmin=false&amp;action=wpfd&amp;task=file.download&amp;wpfd_category_id=26&amp;wpfd_file_id=61207&amp;token=faba6297c3539012b01b0b61056f710a&amp;preview=1\">is looking to change<\/a>\u00a0the state Constitution to create a top-four primary system for\u00a0specific\u00a0statewide and local offices, including running for governor, secretary of state, attorney general, House and Senate offices and for state legislators, among others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Similar initiatives are playing out in other states, like Idaho and Colorado. Last cycle, Nevadans passed a\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure that would require a top-five primary system for certain races like governor, attorney general, Senate and House, among others, federal and statewide races and then implement ranked-choice\u00a0voting in the general election. That\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure must be passed one more time in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Partisan_school_board_elections\"><\/span>Partisan school board elections\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Florida lawmakers are asking voters to weigh in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/initiatives\/fulltext\/pdf\/10-104.pdf\">on a proposed constitutional amendment<\/a>\u00a0that would require district school boards to be elected in partisan elections, which if passed, would be implemented starting in November 2026. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A 1998\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure passed by voters made school board elections nonpartisan, but this newer\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure would seek to reverse that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure is noteworthy as 2024 presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has made education a focal point of his term, including passing legislation dubbed by critics as \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay,\u201d which restricted primary school classrooms from\u00a0including gender identity and sexual orientation in classroom instruction. The law was later expanded to more grade levels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The issue of education became a focal point during Virginia Gov.\u00a0Glenn Youngkin\u2019s (R) 2021 gubernatorial campaign as he leaned into the issue of parental involvement in schools and classroom instruction, helping him flip the governor\u2019s mansion red that year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impeachment_for_a_statewide_office\"><\/span>Impeachment for a statewide office\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In Oregon, lawmakers are asking voters to weigh in on a proposed constitutional amendment that would establish\u00a0an impeachment process for statewide elected officials. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sos.oregon.gov\/admin\/Documents\/irr\/2024\/401text.pdf\">House joint resolution notes<\/a>\u00a0the state House \u201cmay deliver a resolution of impeachment to the Senate\u201d with a two-thirds vote\u00a0for \u201cmalfeasance\u00a0or corrupt conduct in office, willful neglect of statutory or constitutional duty or other felony or high crime.\u201d\u00a0A conviction would subsequently\u00a0require a two-thirds vote in the state Senate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Oregon_Impeachment_of_Elected_State_Executives_Amendment_(2024)\">Ballotpedia\u00a0notes<\/a>\u00a0statewide officeholders can be impeached in the state capitol save for Ohio,\u00a0but this\u00a0ballot\u00a0measure would change that. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oregoncapitalchronicle.com\/2023\/06\/22\/oregon-legislature-could-gain-power-to-impeach-governor-other-elected-officials\/\">Oregon Capital Chronicle\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0several statewide officials have resigned in recent years after being embroiled in conflicts in office. Former state Secretary of State Shemia Fagan (D) resigned earlier this year when it became known that she was doing\u00a0cannabis consulting while her office was responsible for\u00a0auditing cannabis company regulations,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2023\/05\/02\/shemia-fagan-resign-cannabis-oregon-secretary-state\/#:~:text=The%20secretary%20announced%20Tuesday%20that,Tina%20Kotek%20appoints%20a%20successor.\">according to Oregon Public Broadcasting<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Banning_slavery_involuntary_servitude_in_criminal_punishment\"><\/span>Banning slavery, involuntary servitude\u00a0in criminal punishment\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lawmakers in Nevada\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.nv.us\/App\/NELIS\/REL\/81st2021\/Bill\/7795\/Text\">are looking to amend<\/a>\u00a0both the Ordinance of the Nevada Constitution and the Nevada Constitution that would end criminal punishment in the form of\u00a0involuntary servitude or slavery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The state Legislature passed the measure to ban the practice in the 2021 and 2023 sessions but\u00a0is now slated to go before voters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federally, the U.S. Constitution\u2019s 13th\u00a0Amendment says\u00a0\u201cneither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ballotpedia\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Nevada_Question_4,_Remove_Slavery_as_Punishment_for_Crime_from_Constitution_Amendment_(2024)\">notes 16 states<\/a>\u00a0either have exceptions for slavery or involuntary servitude for criminal punishment in their state Constitutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
