{"id":60268,"date":"2020-09-04T13:13:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T10:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ocean-carbon-uptake-widely-underestimated\/"},"modified":"2020-09-04T13:13:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T10:13:00","slug":"ocean-carbon-uptake-widely-underestimated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ocean-carbon-uptake-widely-underestimated\/","title":{"rendered":"#Ocean carbon uptake widely underestimated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Ocean carbon uptake widely underestimated<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2018\/ocean.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: CC0 Public Domain\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2018\/ocean.jpg\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ocean\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800\/2018\/ocean.jpg\" title=\"Credit: CC0 Public Domain\" width=\"800\"><\/img><figcaption>\n                Credit: CC0 Public Domain<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The world&#8217;s oceans soak up more carbon than most scientific models suggest, according to new research.<\/p>\n<section>\n      <\/section>\n<p>Previous estimates of the movement of carbon (known as &#8220;flux&#8221;) between the atmosphere and oceans have not accounted for temperature differences at the water&#8217;s surface and a few metres below.<\/p>\n<p>The new study, led by the University of Exeter, includes this\u2014and finds significantly higher net flux of carbon into the oceans.<br \/>\nIt calculates CO2 fluxes from 1992 to 2018, finding up to twice as much net flux in certain times and locations, compared to uncorrected models.<br \/>\n&#8220;Half of the carbon dioxide we emit doesn&#8217;t stay in the atmosphere but is taken up by the oceans and land vegetation &#8216;sinks&#8217;,&#8221; said Professor Andrew Watson, of Exeter&#8217;s Global Systems Institute.<br \/>\n&#8220;Researchers have assembled a large database of near-surface carbon dioxide measurements\u2014the &#8220;Surface Ocean Carbon Atlas&#8221; (http:\/\/www.socat.info) &#8211; that can be used to calculate the flux of CO2 from the atmosphere into the ocean.<br \/>\n&#8220;Previous studies that have done this have, however, ignored small temperature differences between the surface of the ocean and the depth of a few metres where the measurements are made.<br \/>\n&#8220;Those differences are important because carbon dioxide solubility depends very strongly on temperature.<br \/>\n&#8220;We used satellite data to correct for these temperature differences, and when we do that it makes a big difference\u2014we get a substantially larger flux going into the ocean.<br \/>\n&#8220;The difference in ocean uptake we calculate amounts to about 10 per cent of global fossil fuel emissions.&#8221;<br \/>\nDr. Jamie Shutler, of the Centre for Geography and Environmental <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> on Exeter&#8217;s Penryn Campus in Cornwall, added: &#8220;Our revised estimate agrees much better than previously with an independent method of calculating how much carbon dioxide is being taken up by the ocean.<br \/>\n&#8220;That method makes use of a global ocean survey by research ships over decades, to calculate how the inventory of carbon in the ocean has increased.<br \/>\n&#8220;These two &#8216;big data&#8217; estimates of the ocean sink for CO2 now agree pretty well, which gives us added confidence in them.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe paper, published in <i>Nature Communications<\/i>, is entitled: &#8220;Revised estimates of ocean-atmosphere CO2 flux are consistent with ocean carbon inventory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<div>\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong><br \/>\n                                                &#8220;Revised estimates of ocean-atmosphere CO2 flux are consistent with ocean carbon inventory,&#8221; <i>Nature Communications<\/i> (2020).
