But there\u2019s another component whose potential for a second life could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> changer: the electric motor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extending the use phase of electric motors is crucial for two reasons. Firstly, they contain valuable raw materials such as copper and rare earth metals such as neodymium, which can\u2019t be easily recovered. Secondly, the raw materials used for the motors have a larger carbon footprint than those used for a combustion engine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Current recycling\u00a0methods have proven insufficient in addressing these issues. The recycled raw materials are often contaminated and can\u2019t be reused for motor <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications, while other individual components of the electric motor are destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>To help tackle this challenge, researchers from\u00a0the <span>Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA have launched the REASSERT project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe want to establish a closed-loop system in which valuable resources are reused in order to eliminate dependency on raw material imports and to minimise raw material extraction,\u201d said Julian Gro\u00dfe Erdmann, scientist at the Institute. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">TNW Conference 2024 &#8211; Calling all Startups to join on June 20-21<\/p>\n<p>Showcase your startup in front of investors, change-makers and potential customers with our curated Startup packages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>With this aim at its core, the project focuses on four value retention strategies: <em>reuse<\/em> of the entire engine; <em>repair<\/em> with the replacement of of defective components; <em>remanufacturing<\/em>, where all components are disassembled, cleaned, conditioned, and reassembled; and <em>raw material recycling<\/em> by disassembling the motor and sorting the individual materials before shedding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_new_process_chain\"><\/span>A new process chain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The project will establish a complete process, from motor classification to disassembly, component diagnosis, reassembly, and end-of-life testing. Each of the steps included will have its own demonstrator and test rig.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDepending on the chosen value preservation strategy, different process steps and chains are involved, so the effort for reconditioning may vary,\u201d explained Gro\u00dfe Erdmann.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The team will use reference motors from the passenger EV segment and leverage a specially-developed AI tool that helps select the optimal value retention strategy for each motor.<\/p>\n<p>REASSERT\u2019s goal is to develop a prototype motor that enables the effortless application of the four value retention strategies. If successful, this could lead to the design of new electric motors that support a circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>The project also involves five industry partners:\u00a0<span>Schaeffler (as consortium leader), the Karlsruhe Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a>, BRIGHT Testing GmbH, iFAKT GmbH and Riebesam GmbH &amp; Co. KG.
