{"id":603748,"date":"2024-01-07T02:56:30","date_gmt":"2024-01-06T23:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/lawmakers-reflect-on-third-anniversary-of-jan-6-insurrection\/"},"modified":"2024-01-07T02:56:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-06T23:56:30","slug":"lawmakers-reflect-on-third-anniversary-of-jan-6-insurrection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/lawmakers-reflect-on-third-anniversary-of-jan-6-insurrection\/","title":{"rendered":"#Lawmakers reflect on third anniversary of Jan. 6 insurrection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Justice-obstruction_010624_Photo_AP.png?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Saturday marks the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol when thousands of protestors marched from the \u201cStop the Steal\u201d rally in Washington, D.C., to the Capitol at the direction of former President Trump and participated in an attempt to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle reacted to the attack, and what has h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened in the three years since, in posts online on Saturday.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took time to reflect on the attack in nearly identical posts online, asserting that American democracy actually won that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago, a violent mob fueled by lies attacked the U.S. Capitol,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/POTUS\/status\/1743663910996070724?s=20\">Biden posted on X<\/a>, formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cOur democracy was tested. But it held because We the People prevailed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to us to prove \u2013 for all its imperfections \u2013 American democracy is still a beacon to the world and a promise to be kept,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Harris posted a similar message, denouncing the insurrection and attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results that put both her and Biden into the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn January 6, we were reminded that we still have work to do to protect our democracy and our fundamental freedoms,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VP\/status\/1743659983940489327?s=20\">she said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who wrote an op-ed Friday about her experience, posted online calling for Americans to do their part in preserving democracy.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago, a violent mob stormed the Capitol to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. It was not just an attack on Congress, but on our fundamental freedom,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerPelosi\/status\/1743657148158976383?s=20\">Pelosi wrote.<\/a> \u201cToday, we all much do our part to preserve American Democracy, which Lincoln called \u2018the last best hope of earth.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1743641293136302161?s=20\">posted online<\/a> and said \u201cJanuary 6<sup>th<\/sup> was very real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was within 30 feet of the insurrectionists who invaded the Capitol,\u201d Schumer said. \u201cThey were not peaceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), an outspoken critic of Trump, said the day is a reminder that \u201cpolitics is more than a debate over ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about whether we maintain democracy against those who propagate authoritarianism,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSanders\/status\/1743738752143368329?s=20\">he said.<\/a> \u201cWe can and must create a vibrant democracy where the voices of the people are heard and their needs are addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) also posted about the insurrection. In a post on X, Jeffries said \u201cevery single person responsible for the violent insurrection on January 6 must be held accountable. No one is above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>As of Friday, the Department of Justice said it had convicted almost 1,000 people for crimes ranging from felonies like seditious conspiracy and assaulting U.S. Capitol Police officers to misdemeanors such as trespassing. Nearly 80 people are still wanted and need to be identified for their role in the attack, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Many other Democratic lawmakers posted online to provide thoughts about the insurrection. The House Democrats account on X recalled the attack on \u201cthis somber anniversary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thank the officers who protected us, remember those who lost their lives and recommit to safeguarding our democracy,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HouseDemocrats\/status\/1743655182024483164?s=20\">the post said.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who was the chair of the committee investigating the attack, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BennieGThompson\/status\/1743629540591620204?s=20\">released a statement<\/a> about the work that many members have tirelessly done to \u201cuncover and guard against the threats to American democracy that interrupted the peaceful transfer of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said the country is still in peril three years later. He thanked the law enforcement officers who \u201cheld the line when American democracy was under threat.\u201d He said he hopes the anniversary serves as a call to action for the preservation of democracy for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who also was on the committee, called out members of Congress who \u201ccontinue to deny what took place\u201d that day.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cOur democracy is still fragile \u2013 and we must constantly work to defend it,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepAdamSchiff\/status\/1743659202319471010?s=20\">he said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), also on the committee, said the anniversary is a \u201csolemn reminder\u201d that American democracy \u201ccan\u2019t be taken for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we honor the officers who lost their lives and reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepPeteAguilar\/status\/1743674572782666228?s=20\">Aguilar said.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Former Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), who sat on the committee, said the mob was directed by Trump and \u201cfueled by his election lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe then did nothing to stop it for 187 minutes,\u201d she said. \u201cTrump must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who was on the committee and has become an outspoken critic of Trump and the role he played that day, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamKinzinger?s=20\">posted many times online<\/a> calling out the former President and fellow Republican colleagues for their actions that day and in the years since.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the aisle, Republicans criticized Democrats for their treatment of those found guilty in the years since.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1743744222006566943?s=20\">a series of posts online<\/a> Saturday that likened the insurrection to the damage caused by the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests that took place across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatriotic pretrial J6 defendants are rotting away in jail, many being held in solitary confinement, and Joe Biden brags about it!\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1743750164462936479?s=20\">Greene posted.<\/a> \u201cMeanwhile, most BLM rioters who caused billions of $\u2019s in damages and set our country on fire haven\u2019t spent a single day in jail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe media loves to propagandize the events of J6 to villainize peaceful Trump supporters,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) told followers to \u201cnever forget the way that Joe Biden has treated and is still treating the political prisoners from that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country cannot claim a moral high ground any longer when it comes to political prosecutions and political prisoners due to what has stemmed from that day,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/laurenboebert\/status\/1743692832341213358?s=20\">Boebert posted.<\/a> \u201cI will fight for justice to be restored to America and for these wrongs to be made right!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
