Google updated its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/appearance\/snippet\">snippets control help document<\/a> to clarify this language. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What Google said. <\/strong>Google <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates#clarifying-primary-source-of-snippets\">explained<\/a> that it \u201cClarified in our\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/appearance\/snippet\">documentation about snippets<\/a>\u00a0that the primary source of the snippet is the page content itself.\u201d \u201cThe previous wording incorrectly implied that structured data and the meta description HTML element are the primary sources for snippets,\u201d Google wrote.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What changed. <\/strong>Google updated the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/appearance\/snippet\">snippets control help document<\/a> to change the lead paragraph to say, \u201cGoogle primarily uses the content on the page to automatically determine the appropriate snippet. We may also use descriptive information in the meta description element when it describes the page better than other parts of the content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle uses a number of different sources to automatically determine the appropriate snippet, including descriptive information in the meta description tag for each page. We may also use information found on the page, or create rich results based on markup and content on the page,\u201d was the previous wording.<\/p>\n<p>Google also removed all references to rich results in the document.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Most of you probably already knew that Google primarily uses the page content for the snippets it shows in the Google Search results. But there are some cases where Google may use other HTML elements for your snippets.
