{"id":603908,"date":"2024-01-08T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/democrats-question-whether-biden-should-agree-to-debate-trump\/"},"modified":"2024-01-08T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T11:00:00","slug":"democrats-question-whether-biden-should-agree-to-debate-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/democrats-question-whether-biden-should-agree-to-debate-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"#Democrats question whether Biden should agree to debate Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Trump-debate_010624_Illustration_CourtneyJonesGregNashandAdobeStock.png?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers are leery about the prospect of President Biden debating former President Trump, fearing that putting the two on stage together would only elevate the likely GOP nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has skipped every Republican presidential primary debate thus far but says he\u2019s eager to debate Biden. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt before Christmas that he would \u201clook forward\u201d to facing Biden and suggested 10 debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers, however, are not relishing that scenario. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would think twice about it,\u201d said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) about the prospect of Biden debating Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been physically present at one of [Trump\u2019s] debates with Hillary Clinton, and I watched him do outrageous things and say outrageous things. It\u2019s just an opportunity for him to display his extremism.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers talk publicly about Biden running on his record of accomplishment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But privately they concede they are counting on Trump collapsing under the weight of more than 90 felony charges and his penchant for conflict and outlandish claims turning off women and swing voters. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>At the same time, they acknowledge that voters\u2019 perception of Biden\u2019s age \u2014\u00a0he\u2019s 81 years old \u2014 is his biggest political liability. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Democrats think Biden won his two debates with Trump in 2020, he would be four years older if he faced Trump on stage again. Trump turned 77 in June. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats worry that Trump\u2019s image is so bad that if he merely surpasses low expectations on a debate stage with Biden, it could be as helpful as winning a debate outright. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>That\u2019s what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened in the 2000 presidential campaign when former President George W. Bush exceeded expectations in his first debate against then-Vice President Al Gore. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest concern is that putting Trump next to Biden on a stage and giving him equal time before a national audience would have some legitimizing effect on a candidate who regularly makes incendiary remarks and continues to claim that the 2020 election was stolen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump shocked even Republicans on Capitol Hill recently when he declared that immigrants are \u201cpoisoning the blood of our country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Durbin said \u201cthat\u2019s the kind of fascist blather that the United States should reject from either political party.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats argue that Trump shouldn\u2019t even appear on the ballot because they believe he violated the 14th\u00a0Amendment, which bars anyone who took an oath to support the Constitution and later engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the country from holding federal office. The Supreme Court on Friday said it would consider a Colorado ruling on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic senators say the decision to debate Trump belongs entirely to Biden and his campaign team, but some of them argue that Biden doesn\u2019t need to feel compelled to debate Trump. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a close Biden ally, called Trump\u2019s comments about immigrants poisoning the nation \u201chateful, fascist remarks,\u201d adding that Trump makes such statements \u201cwith regular frequency.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in the room for one of the debates in 2020 \u2014 Chris Wallace was the moderator. The former president in no way at all respected the rules or the tradition or decorum\u201d of presidential debates, Coons said. \u201cIt was a disaster.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coons was referring to Biden\u2019s and Trump\u2019s first presidential debate in September 2020, which devolved into a chaotic mess of interruptions and cross-talking. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Wallace, who was a Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> anchor at the time, later blamed Trump for bearing \u201cthe primary responsibility for what happened\u201d and expressed frustration that voters nationwide didn\u2019t get \u201cthe debate they wanted\u201d or \u201cdeserved.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to get ahead of myself on campaign strategy,\u201d Coons said, pointing out that Trump hasn\u2019t yet won the GOP nomination, though he is viewed as the overwhelming favorite.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Delaware senator said there\u2019s no reason to dignify Trump as a candidate by debating him, especially considering that Trump has refused to debate any of his Republican primary opponents. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that former President Trump was unable to conduct himself in just a minimally reasonable way\u201d during the 2020 debate \u201cand that he\u2019s refusing to debate any of his primary opponents this time would make a pretty strong case for not dignifying him as a candidate by sharing a debate stage,\u201d Coons said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coons emphasized that he was not speaking on behalf of Biden\u2019s campaign. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not all Democrats, however, agree that Biden doesn\u2019t need to debate Trump.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said while it would be risky for Biden to face Trump, it would look bad if the president ducked his opponent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s damage if you don\u2019t [debate]. There\u2019s damage if you do and you don\u2019t do well,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of expected of a presidential candidate.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carville said Trump will have legitimacy as a candidate if he wins the GOP nomination, even though he would be barred from even voting in most states if he\u2019s convicted on any of the dozens of felony counts he\u2019s now facing. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he gets the nomination, Republican primary voters will have given him legitimacy. I mean, we don\u2019t hand it out like gummy bears or something,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carville noted that the Commission on Presidential Debates has already scheduled three <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election debates for later this year in Texas, Virginia and Utah, though neither Biden nor Trump has committed to anything yet. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody\u2019s going to take a poll, and 73 percent of the people will think there ought to be a debate,\u201d he predicted. \u201cYou can do it or not do it as you see fit, but there are consequences to it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carville said Trump is going to \u201cscream and yell\u201d if Biden doesn\u2019t debate him. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lead strategist of former President Clinton\u2019s 1992 presidential campaign acknowledged that Biden\u2019s age is an issue but warned that avoiding a debate with Trump would only put a brighter spotlight on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot debating would certainly accentuate the age problem,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously a decision that\u2019s going to be discussed and parsed and gone over with a fine-tooth [comb].\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carville suggested Biden \u201ccould agree to one.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strategists say Biden would have more impetus to debate Trump if he\u2019s still trailing him in the polls a few months before Election Day. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some polls, such as a recent New York Times\/Siena College survey of registered voters nationwide, show Trump leading Biden among registered voters nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic strategist Steve Jarding said Trump lost any leverage in demanding multiple general-election\u00a0debates by\u00a0refusing to face his GOP challengers, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, this past summer and fall. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump is the wrong guy to suggest that he\u2019s setting parameters. This is the guy that refused to debate his Republican opponents. So when he calls for 10 debates, it\u2019s like, \u2018You don\u2019t get to do that, Don,\u2019\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there\u2019s the optics of age, though Trump\u2019s not a spring chicken, either,\u201d Jarding said. \u201cAlthough there is a history that Biden did pretty well in debates last time\u201d in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jarding said that from the incumbent\u2019s point of view, if \u201cthings are going well, you want to debate. If things aren\u2019t going well, you don\u2019t want to debate, because you\u2019re going to talk about things that aren\u2019t going well, and that will highlight them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leaving aside the questions about Biden\u2019s \u201cage\u201d and Trump\u2019s \u201cbravado,\u201d Jarding\u00a0said\u00a0Biden has a strong reason to debate because it will give him a chance to talk about his record, which includes 22 consecutive months of sub-4 percent unemployment. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas prices are down, we just had a good jobs report for December, another one. Things are going pretty well,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got inflation under control \u2026 Normally, that\u2019s a debate I want to have.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he acknowledged that counting on having a facts-based debate about the economy with Trump is \u201ca risk\u201d because \u201cTrump doesn\u2019t play by any rules.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are risks, I get that, but the publicity that you would get I just think would be potentially off the charts. The president of the United States would say, \u2018Here\u2019s my record. I\u2019m proud of it,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s risky. If the economy wasn\u2019t going well, I\u2019d say, \u2018No way, no, don\u2019t do it. He didn\u2019t debate his Republican opponents, you don\u2019t have to debate him.
