It is now expected to crash land into Earth on January 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astrobotic Technology, the company that built the lander, said it is now <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working with NASA on a \u201ccontrolled re-entry\u201d of Peregrine. The firm expects the lander to burn up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere, and not pose any safety risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peregrine Mission 1 was to be the first time an American company sent a spacecraft to the moon and the first time the US returned to the lunar surface in more than 50 years. It was also carrying several payloads and novel instruments, including the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first piece of European technology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ever to touch down on the moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as an Exospheric Mass Spectrometer (EMS), the tech was a crucial component of Peregrine. PITMS will \u201csniff out\u201d lunar gases, providing valuable insights into lunar composition and conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of the failed mission, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Si<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meon Barber of The Open University said they were now \u201cracing against time to get the very best from the PITMS instrument in these challenging circumstances\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Peregrine disintegrates upon reentry, so will all its payloads, which include the human remains of British <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction writer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Arthur Charles Clarke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who co-wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lunar lander also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contained the remains of multiple Star Trek cast members and the DNA of four former US presidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing end, Astroboti<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c CEO John Thornton remains optimistic. \u201cThis mission has already taught us so much and has given me great confidence that our next <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to the Moon will achieve a soft landing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astrobotic\u2019s next mission to the Moon is scheduled for November 2024. Its Griffin lander will take NASA\u2019s VIPER rover to the lunar south pole where it will explore <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the mysteries of its water and better understand the environment where NASA plans to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/jan\/10\/nasa-postpones-plans-to-send-humans-to-moon-artemis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">land astronauts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whens_Europes_turn\"><\/span><b>When\u2019s Europe\u2019s turn?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that Europe hasn\u2019t even landed its first piece of technology on the Moon yet, let alone a human being, shows just how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far behind we are in the new space race<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of now, it seems that the first <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-4-5-moon-missions-european-astronauts#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20We%20now%20know%20when%20Europeans,Josef%20Aschbacher%20told%20Space.com.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European astronaut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to land on the Moon will be somewhere around 2028, aboard NASA\u2019s Artemis IIII mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, things are looking more promising from a technology perspective. Late last year the European Space Agency (ESA) announced is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will start a competition to develop commercial vehicles to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2023\/nov\/26\/europe-moon-space-race-esa-india-russia-china-japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transport cargo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to and from the International Space Station (ISS) by 2028. This would be a step towards developing a fully European-made crewed vehicle, the ESA\u2019s director <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> Josef Aschbacher said at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would be the first time that Europe has developed a crew transportation vehicle. While it would initially be used to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/commercialisation.esa.int\/opportunities\/commercial-cargo-transportation-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transport humans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to and from the ISS, Aschbacher said that in the future it could also serve other destinations beyond low Earth orbit \u2014 in other words, bases on the Moon and Mars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening of the competition signals the strengthening of Europe\u2019s private space sector, where government agencies contract companies to provide critical services like launch capability.
