Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) won the consolation prize, edging out former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.<\/p>\n<p>The caucuses winnowed the field, as they often do, with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy suspending his campaign after a lowly fourth-place showing. Ramaswamy endorsed Trump, as expected.<\/p>\n<p>The weather was a major factor in this year\u2019s caucuses as a polar vortex plunged Iowa into temperatures well below zero. Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been the coldest caucus day ever.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere around 112,000 Iowans caucused, well shy of the record of approximately 186,000 set in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the winners and losers from Monday night.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WINNERS\"><\/span><strong><u>WINNERS<\/u><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Former_President_Trump\"><\/span><strong>Former President Trump<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The night could hardly have gone better for Trump.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He won by the resounding margin polls had been predicting, with no signs of softening or complacency among his supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He appears to have cleared the 50-percent mark, which robs his rivals of the argument that a majority of caucus-goers were against him.<\/p>\n<p>Just as importantly, the close result between DeSantis and Haley likely keeps both in the race for some time to come \u2014 ensuring the non-Trump vote remains divided.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Trump was unusually conciliatory, by his standards, in his roughly 20-minute victory speech to supporters here. He gave a modicum of praise to his rivals, saying that they had all been \u201chaving a good time together,\u201d and that Haley and DeSantis \u201cboth did very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also contended it was \u201ctime now for everybody to come together\u201d\u00a0\u2014 a remark that will appear incongruous to the critics of the most polarizing president of modern times.<\/p>\n<p>But the mild tone was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> push from Team Trump to nudge his rivals to step aside.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Kari Lake, the Trump loyalist who lost her bid to become governor of Arizona in 2022 and is now a Senate candidate in the state, told The Hill that the other candidates\u2019 bids were now \u201cvanity projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have a chance to win,\u201d Lake said. \u201cFor them to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into Iowa and New Hampshire to try to bring down an incredible candidate\u2026would be unfortunate. I hope they take a little break, do a little soul-searching and recognize that President Trump is the man to help save America.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pollsters\"><\/span><strong>Pollsters<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pollsters take enormous flak when they get things wrong, but they had a solid performance in the Hawkeye State.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>That\u2019s no mean feat in caucuses, which are inherently difficult to poll, and in this case the savage weather introduced another element of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s 30-point lead, with 98 percent of the vote counted, was squarely within the range of most pollsters\u2019 predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Critics will note that Haley had overtaken DeSantis for second in several of the final polls before the caucuses.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But, to be fair, some of the best pollsters had placed caveats around those results because of an apparent lack of passion from some of Haley\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n<p>J. Ann Selzer, the driving force behind the highly regarded Des Moines Register poll, said two days before the caucuses that there was \u201cunderlying weakness\u201d to Haley\u2019s level of support and that \u201ca disproportionate share of her supporters might stay at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That appears to be exactly what happened.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Iowa_caucuses\"><\/span><strong>The Iowa caucuses<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Iowa Republican Party can breathe a sigh of relief now that the caucuses themselves went smoothly despite challenging circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>The turnout was admittedly fairly low \u2014 but it still hit a creditable level given the weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>There were no reports of significant irregularities nor did any candidate question the results.<\/p>\n<p>This was all the more important after the debacle of the Democratic Party\u2019s Iowa caucuses four years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion, the system for reporting the results failed catastrophically. Ultimately the Democrats s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ped Iowa of its first in the nation status in their primary process.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mixed\"><\/span><strong><u>Mixed<\/u><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ron_DeSantis\"><\/span><strong>Ron DeSantis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The bottom line: DeSantis survived.<\/p>\n<p>If he had fallen to third place, there would have been a chorus of calls for the Florida governor to quit the race \u2014 especially as he heads into the less hospitable territory of New Hampshire, where he is third in polls, and Haley\u2019s home state of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>By coming second, DeSantis can claim to have outperformed expectations. During his caucus night speech to supporters, he said that \u201cin spite of all of that they threw at us, everyone against us, we\u2019ve got our ticket punched out of Iowa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DeSantis camp was also infuriated by the early calls of the race by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> organizations. The Florida governor\u2019s allies have a legitimate case to make that this could have depressed his vote.<\/p>\n<p>For all that, a distant second in Iowa isn\u2019t much to boast about for a candidate who at one point believed the state was ideal terrain upon which to upset Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The road ahead is enormously difficult, but the Florida governor lives to fight another day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Losers\"><\/span><strong><u>Losers<\/u><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nikki_Haley\"><\/span><strong>Nikki Haley<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Haley\u2019s campaign is eagerly making the case that the Iowa result was a moral victory for her.<\/p>\n<p>It really wasn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The candidate herself contended, in her post-caucuses speech, that \u201ctonight Iowa made this Republican primary a two-person race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good spin. But it\u2019s not a hugely persuasive argument when the candidate has just come third, lagging roughly 32 points behind the winner.<\/p>\n<p>Deeper analyses of the result also seem to show a persistent problem. Haley\u2019s supporters are overwhelmingly voters with a college education, in a party where those people are outnumbered by voters without college degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Haley isn\u2019t out of the race by any means.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She might well come back strong in New Hampshire. It is easier to lay out a hypothetical path to the nomination for her than it is for DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>But she was a loser in Iowa simply because she badly wanted a second-place finish and didn\u2019t get it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Media_projections\"><\/span><strong>Media projections<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The media is in another furor of its own making after projecting Trump as the winner of the caucuses roughly a half-hour after they began.<\/p>\n<p>The calls came before many Iowans had voted.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press and several TV networks based their calls on a combination of voter surveys and the very earliest returns.<\/p>\n<p>But there had previously been a generally accepted guideline that projections of a result are not made while the polls are still open. The rule of thumb was broken on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Cuccinelli, a founder of the main super-PAC supporting DeSantis, told The Hill in a text message that the early calls were \u201cabsolutely outrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe networks were calling the race when the polls opened,\u201d he protested.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the DeSantis camp has a vested interest in making the argument that his vote could have been higher.<\/p>\n<p>But, by any reasonable standard, the super-early projections amounted to another questionable media moment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vivek_Ramaswamy\"><\/span><strong>Vivek Ramaswamy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>He\u2019s out.<\/p>\n<p>There was no path forward for Ramaswamy after he trailed in fourth with about eight percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome showed what polls had long indicated \u2014 for all the ardor of his online fan base, Ramaswamy had extremely limited appeal. Indeed, the share of voters viewing him unfavorably actually climbed during his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaswamy offered Trump his \u201cfull endorsement\u201d as he withdrew from the race.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
