Chris Webber has quietly amassed a production and songwriting discography over the years, including a pair of placements producing for Nas during his Hall-of-Fame basketball career.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview that\u2019 went viral on social media<\/a> this week, C-Webb explained how they came about. He revealed that, after graduating from the University of Michigan, he used to hang out in New Jersey living with Naughty By Nature\u2018s Kay Gee during the summer, from whom he learned the ropes on production.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just go to his house in [New] Jersey every summer, man,\u201d he began. \u201cShout-out to his parents, his family they would just let me stay there. He had a studio. I mean I could stay there for days. No one come bother you. In that time, I learned how to make beats.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just takes you where you meet a couple people that you like-minded. Nas, he was somebody I admired from afar. I loved his rhymes. We became close. He was just hearing some beats and he was like, \u2018Yo, put that on.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Webber went on to say that working with Nas was a huge deal to him, event though he played it cool. \u201cFor me, it sounded call and I\u2019m being calm about it. But it\u2019s still one of the biggest accomplishments of my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have a song \u2018Blunt Ashes\u2019 and then have \u2018Surviving the Times\u2019 on his other album. For me, somebody that make beats and listen to music all the time, grew up in Detroit where music is that; it was just dope being a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first placement for Webber came with \u201cBlunt Ashes\u201d<\/a> which landed on Nas\u2019 Hip Hop Is Dead<\/em> album in 2006. The album was nominated at the 50th Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album but lost out to Kanye West\u2019s Graduation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurviving the Times,\u201d which samples Nipsey Russel, earned a spot on a 2007 Greatest Hits<\/em> compilation album from Escobar.<\/p>\n

By that time, Webber\u2019s NBA career was winding down and he retired after the 2007-2008 campaign following 15 years in the league which saw him make the All-Star Game<\/a> five times and win Rookie of the Year in 1994.<\/p>\n

C-Webb made headlines earlier in January when he reunited with his college teammates \u2014 famously known as the Fab 5<\/a> (Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King) \u2014 at the University of Michigan for the first time on campus since leaving the school for the NBA Draft in 1993.<\/p>\n

Webber isn\u2019t the only person to share their thoughts on Nas\u2019 old catalog in last few days.<\/p>\n

On January 4, Vince Staples tweeted that he was about to listen to Nas\u2019 1996 track \u201cI Gave You Power\u201d for the first time. Like Staples\u2019 2022 number \u201cWhen Sparks Fly,\u201d \u201cI Gave You Power\u2019 contains sections spoken from the voice of a firearm.<\/p>\n

Staples\u2019 song switches perspectives, with the first verse featuring the gun\u2019s owner speaking to it, and the gun speaking in the second; in Nas\u2019 track, the gun is the narrator the entire time.<\/p>\n

10 minutes later, Vince was back with his review \u2014 and a suggestion to boot: \u201c[T]his was a good tune. He shoulda put\u00a0Ghostface\u00a0on here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, \u201cI Gave You Power\u201d has been praised by Hip Hop stars like\u00a050 Cent\u00a0and\u00a0J. Cole. The latter explained the song\u2019s impact on him during a speech at the\u00a02014 VIBE Impact Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
