\n LUCERNE, Switzerland \u2013 The world\u2019s first electric-powered hydrofoil speedboat, which reduces energy consumption and noise \u2013 as well as sea sickness \u2013 by \u201cflying\u201d above the waves, has made its debut on Switzerland\u2019s lakes.<\/p>\n

The Candela Seven can hit speeds of 34 miles per hour when its foils lift it out of the water. Its manufacturers say it travel<\/a>s further and smoother than other electric boats.<\/p>\n

The foils reduce water friction \u2013 and the effect of waves slamming into the boat \u2013 cutting energy consumption by 80% compared to normal diesel-powered boats and extending the craft\u2019s range to 56 miles.<\/p>\n

The carbon fiber boat also carries an on-board computer which automatically adjusts the foil positions 100 times per second to reduce rolling and sea-sickness.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we don\u2019t have any waves hitting, we don\u2019t have any slamming or bumping around and you really have a quiet a smooth ride,\u201d Swiss importer Christian Vogel told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Until now, electric boats have tended to sacrifice either speed or range because of the capacity limits of their batteries.<\/p>\n

The Candela Seven made its Swiss debut on Lake Lucerne this week, with Candela Speed Boat hoping to drum up new business with a European tour. The Stockholm-based company has delivered 16 boats since last year.<\/p>\n

The boat, which costs around $296,000, would be a good fit for Switzerland\u2019s lakeside cities like Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva, said Vogel.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople could use it to commute across lakes or for day trips,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can drive this with a clean conscience<\/a> from an environmental point of view, and it\u2019s great fun.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
