{"id":605743,"date":"2024-01-23T04:18:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-23T01:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/conde-nast-union-members-launch-24-hour-walkout-amid-layoff-talks\/"},"modified":"2024-01-23T04:18:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T01:18:00","slug":"conde-nast-union-members-launch-24-hour-walkout-amid-layoff-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/conde-nast-union-members-launch-24-hour-walkout-amid-layoff-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"#Cond\u00e9 Nast Union Members Launch 24-Hour Walkout Amid Layoff Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Union members who work at Cond\u00e9 Nast brands including<em> Vanity Fair<\/em>, <em>Vogue<\/em> and <em>GQ<\/em> will be walking off the job on Tuesday to protest negotiations conduct that they claim violates labor law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    More than 400 Cond\u00e9 Nast Union members at those three publications as well as <em>Allure, Architectural Digest, Bon <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>\u00e9tit, Cond\u00e9 Nast <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a>er, Epicurious, Glamour, Self, Teen Vogue<\/em> and Cond\u00e9 Nast Entertainment are set to strike for 24 hours on Tuesday and hold a rally in front of the company\u2019s offices in New York. The action stems from labor negotiations that have turned sour since Cond\u00e9 Nast CEO Roger Lynch announced the company\u2019s intentions to cut 5 percent of its workforce on Nov. 1. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The one-day walkout \u201cis really about the company engaging in regressive bargaining and breaking the law in bargaining by rescinding an offer that they had previously made around layoffs,\u201d the union\u2019s Cond\u00e9 Nast Entertainment unit vice chair Ben Dewey, a videographer, told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s so much solidarity that everybody is really looking out for their coworkers and willing to go on strike for this unfair way that the company is engaging in bargaining.\u201d According to Dewey, Tuesday\u2019s action is the first Cond\u00e9 Nast-wide strike in the company\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>THR <\/em>has reached out to Cond\u00e9 Nast for comment. <em>I\u2019m a Virgo<\/em> director Boots Riley <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BootsRiley\/status\/1749586952557662388\">tweeted<\/a> out the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The walkout is timed to coincide with the announcement of nominations for the 96th Academy Awards, which is an important news day for select Cond\u00e9 Nast brands, such as <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. To amplify the specificity of the choice, the union is planning on staging an Oscars-themed picket line starting at 10 a.m. ET in front of Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s One World Trade Center offices that will feature a red carpet and a \u201cstep-and-repeat\u201d area for photography, while a rally starting at 1 p.m. ET will include an \u201cawards ceremony,\u201d per the union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe just really want to show how much Cond\u00e9 relies on union members to cover big events like the Oscar nominations,\u201d explained Dewey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The NewsGuild of New York, the umbrella labor group of which the Cond\u00e9 Nast Union is one part, has filed two unfair labor practices charges against Cond\u00e9 Nast with the National Labor Relations Board since the Nov. 1 layoffs announcement. In December the union <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nlrb.gov\/case\/02-CA-331325\">claimed<\/a> that the company surveilled and intimidated members while they were trying to gain clarity about layoffs \u201cin at least three instances.\u201d At the time, Cond\u00e9 Nast said in a statement that its security team \u201cfollowed standard building security protocol and did not engage with any union member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And this month the organization alleged that the company had engaged in \u201cregressive bargaining\u201d by downsizing a severance offer. According to the union, Cond\u00e9 Nast originally proposed cutting 94 union jobs, or 20 percent of the union, and providing laid-off workers a severance package it was offering other staffers in the company. After a union counter-offer, the company allegedly proposed still cutting 94 union jobs and cutting its previous severance offer in half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The move was made \u201cto remind management of their worth and urge company reps to bargain in good faith. We demand nothing less,\u201d said NewsGuild of New York president Susan DeCarava in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Aside from their ongoing negotiations over layoffs, the Cond\u00e9 Nast Union and management also remain locked in negotiations over a first contract. Management voluntarily recognized the union after a card check in September 2022, and the two parties have been bargaining over the agreement ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Tuesday\u2019s work stoppage follows a similar action on Jan. 19 at the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, whose newsroom is represented by the West Coast sister union to the NewsGuild of New York, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Guild of the West.
