Roger Wicker (Miss.), the top-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, slammed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin\u2019s response to questions about his hospitalization earlier this month as \u201ccompletely unacceptable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wicker on Monday expressed his displeasure over Austin\u2019s responses to a letter the senior GOP senator sent on Jan. 10 demanding to know the details of the Defense secretary\u2019s treatment for complications related to prostate surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Wicker asked Austin to explain when he was admitted to an intensive care unit and why he was transported by ambulance instead of his security detail. He also asked about the nature and timeline of Austin\u2019s incapacitation and who was notified of his medical situation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senator said the answers he got were inadequate. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis response is completely unacceptable. It fails to answer specific questions we posed about the secretary\u2019s decisions and actions,\u201d Wicker said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have given Secretary Austin and the department every opportunity to be forthright. Their failure to provide a fully truthful accounting of events is dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing. Something like this cannot be permitted to happen again,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin, in a Jan. 18 letter to Wicker, wrote that \u201cat no time during my stay at Walter Reed were there any gaps in authorities or risk to command-and-control.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He insisted that he or Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks \u201chave always been fully prepared to support the president as commander-in-chief\u201d throughout his time in the hospital. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Austin explained he underwent a prostatectomy at Walter Reed on Dec. 22and that his deputy secretary assumed the duties of his office while he was under <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> anesthesia. He said he was discharged from the hospital and resumed his duties as secretary that same day. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin said he experienced an unexpected complication on Jan. 1 when he began feeling nausea and pain in his abdomen, hip and leg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to return to Walter Reed via ambulance, given the amount of pain that I was experiencing. The following day, I was admitted to the intensive care unit for closer monitoring, and the Deputy Secretary again assumed the functions and duties of my office,\u201d he wrote. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He said that Hicks always had access to classified and unclassified communications systems, even though she was in Puerto Rico at the time. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said he resumed his \u201cfunctions and duties\u201d on Jan. 5 and never lost consciousness or underwent anesthesia after being admitted to the hospital on New Year\u2019s Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile at Walter Reed, I had full access to required secure communications capabilities and continued to monitor the Department\u2019s day-to-day operations worldwide,\u201d he wrote to Wicker. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But Austin acknowledged that he should have done a better job keeping President Biden and the White House fully informed about the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said he shared Wicker\u2019s concerns that \u201cthe department must take steps to improve policies and procedures to ensure timely notification of the president, senior officials within the Department of Defense.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always said that the Department of Defense is a learning organization and I am committed to transparency and improving processes moving forward, he said, noting that the Pentagon\u2019s performance improvement officer and director of administration and management is conducting a review of the matter and will issue a report within 30 days.\u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
