{"id":605920,"date":"2024-01-24T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ukraine-running-low-on-ammunition-without-us-aid-pentagon-says\/"},"modified":"2024-01-24T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T09:00:00","slug":"ukraine-running-low-on-ammunition-without-us-aid-pentagon-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ukraine-running-low-on-ammunition-without-us-aid-pentagon-says\/","title":{"rendered":"#Ukraine running low on ammunition without US aid, Pentagon says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/AP24023759199048-e1706068765135.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ukrainian forces are running out of ammunition in their fight against\u00a0Russia, with Moscow using that shortfall as a chance to\u00a0probe weaknesses in Kyiv\u2019s military, a senior Pentagon official said Tuesday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With U.S. military assistance\u00a0to Ukraine\u00a0dried up\u00a0as of\u00a0December \u2014\u00a0a symptom of Congress being unable to\u00a0pass\u00a0President Biden\u2019s emergency\u00a0funding request for the embattled country\u00a0\u2014\u00a0officials\u00a0there\u00a0\u201cbelieve\u00a0that units do not have the stocks and stores of ammunition that they require,\u201d\u00a0according to Celeste Wallander, the Defense Department official in charge of international security affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden in October\u00a0requested nearly $61.5\u00a0billion\u00a0to help supply Ukraine with weapons and replenish U.S. stocks, funding meant to offer a fresh surge of assistance\u00a0as DOD neared the end of money earlier allotted by Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But with Ukraine coffers since running empty and Congress bitterly locked over new security policies for the southern border, Washington has been unable to send direly needed lethal assistance\u00a0to Kyiv\u00a0at the same levels as the past\u00a0two years, Wallander said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is one of the reasons we have been focusing on the need to answer Congress\u2019s questions so that they are able to move forward on a decision to pass a supplemental,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last U.S. weapons package to Ukraine was announced nearly a\u00a0month ago, on Dec. 27, and included $250 million in artillery, air defenses and other weapons and equipment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked\u00a0whether the lack of consistent aid packages was creating shortfalls for Ukraine, Wallander said officials have reported that the change\u00a0in\u00a0pace and volume of the aid tranches \u201cdid affect their planning and their operations\u201d this past fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other than ammunition, Ukraine also needs artillery shells and interceptors to defend against the Russian drones and missiles, Wallander noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>What\u2019s\u00a0more, Russia has taken notice of the gap\u00a0and employed a surge of\u00a0missile and drone attacks\u00a0against Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve\u00a0seen them not only continue to use ballistic missiles and cruise missiles and [drones],\u00a0but we have seen periods in which they are using\u00a0coordinated barrages of those capabilities,\u201d\u00a0Wallander said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Case in point, earlier on Tuesday, Kremlin forces fired 41 missiles at Ukrainian cities, according to Kyiv\u2019s air force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>She said there were two intentions to this method \u2014 to try to overwhelm Ukrainian defense capabilities in a particular location and seek to force the Ukrainians to use up the already limited ammunition and air defenses they have. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve\u00a0not succeeded so far. The Ukrainians have a lot of experience over the last two years in how to cope with these kinds of Russian assaults,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wallander\u00a0spoke to reporters after the U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group\u00a0met virtually. The group is made up of\u00a0Western military and defense chiefs with the goal of aiding\u00a0Ukraine, with major assistance\u00a0packages typically\u00a0announced after each meeting.\u00a0That did not h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en this time, however,\u00a0as\u00a0Biden\u2019s supplemental\u00a0request languishes in Congress. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And later on\u00a0Tuesday, Pentagon press secretary\u00a0Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters\u00a0the lack of funding has forced the building\u00a0to \u201cpause\u201d sending\u00a0additional\u00a0weapons from its inventories \u201cgiven the implications for our own military readiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis, of course, prevents us from meeting Ukraine\u2019s most urgent battlefield needs to include things like artillery rounds, anti-tank weapons, air defense interceptors.\u00a0Ryder said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, no\u00a0extra funding means DOD can\u2019t\u00a0give\u00a0Ukraine the systems and equipment needed\u00a0for medium- and longer-term requirements, nor\u00a0help them sustain the systems the United States\u00a0has already given\u00a0them,\u00a0he\u00a0added.\u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
