{"id":606031,"date":"2024-01-25T07:27:40","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T04:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mcconnell-floats-splitting-ukraine-and-border-security-amid-gop-infighting\/"},"modified":"2024-01-25T07:27:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T04:27:40","slug":"mcconnell-floats-splitting-ukraine-and-border-security-amid-gop-infighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mcconnell-floats-splitting-ukraine-and-border-security-amid-gop-infighting\/","title":{"rendered":"#McConnell floats splitting Ukraine and border security amid GOP infighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/mcconnellmitch_012424gn02_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Wednesday floated the possibility to Senate Republicans of splitting Ukraine funding from border security reforms that are coming under heavy criticism from Senate conservatives. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell acknowledged to GOP senators at a Wednesday afternoon meeting that the politics of border security have turned out to be a lot more complicated than he and other Senate Republicans anticipated when they insisted months ago on linking Ukraine funding to border security, according to Senate GOP sources familiar with his comments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think the border portion is dead,\u201d said one Republican senator, who cited McConnell\u2019s remarks to the GOP conference at the Wednesday meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker said that McConnell told GOP senators \u201cthis has gotten to be a lot more politically difficult than he thought it would be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounded to me like the first step toward saying, \u2018We just can\u2019t get this done,\u2019\u201d the source said. \u201cI predict the border part falls off.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine funding has long been a priority for McConnell, however, and he didn\u2019t back down from his push to provide tens of billions of more dollars in military aid to Kyiv. <\/p>\n<p>A second Senate GOP source familiar with McConnell\u2019s comments said he was \u201claying out the options\u201d to Republican senators now that it\u2019s become clear that Senate conservatives strongly oppose the border security reforms that were negotiated with Democrats to go along with Ukraine funding. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While McConnell and other Senate Republicans believe the concessions extracted from Democrats would be \u201chuge wins,\u201d the source said, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears that former President Trump, the party\u2019s likely presidential nominee, will oppose the package. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The source, however, emphasized that McConnell was not \u201cdefinitive\u201d about removing border security reforms from Ukraine funding and was only laying out the options for the emergency defense supplemental spending package, which Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will eventually bring to the Senate floor. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans who support the emerging package say it\u2019s becoming clear that Trump will oppose it, which means it has little to no chance of passing the Republican-controlled House. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump people want to kill it and run on the issue,\u201d said the Senate source familiar with the internal Republican discussion. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) told reporters at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that a Senate package linking Ukraine funding and border security has \u201czero point zero, zero, zero percent\u201d chance of passing the House, a sentiment expressed by other GOP senators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cruz said under the deal negotiated by Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who was tapped by McConnell to lead the border security talks, the number of migrants coming into the country on a daily basis would be twice as high as under former President Barrack Obama. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt ain\u2019t going to pass\u2026. We had a vigorous discussion at lunch yesterday \u2013 I asked leadership, \u2018Why on earth would you be teeing up a vote with every Democrat and 10 or 12 Republicans that has no chance of passing the House?\u201d Cruz said, recounting a tense moment in the Tuesday Senate GOP lunch. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Dropping border security language that has been painstakingly negotiated with Senate Democrats and the White House over the past six weeks from Ukraine funding would be quite a shift in strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that may be the only option for saving Ukraine funding given how much opposition the border security reforms are now facing from Republican conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump weighed in last week when he wrote on Truth <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions &amp; Millions of people.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McConnell may also be willing to reduce economic assistance for Ukraine from the package in order to attract more Republican votes for the proposal if it\u2019s s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ped of the border security measure. Such a package would keep military aid and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.), McConnell\u2019s top deputy, has floated the idea of cutting some economic assistance Ukraine out of the package to improve the chances of getting the military aid passed. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally speaking, I\u2019d like to see portions [of economic assistance] pared down. I think the number is really high and there a lot of things funded in there.
