\n Christopher Nolan app<\/a>reciates all film projects, big or small, but he admits that he will likely continue to work on \u201clarge-scale\u201d productions.<\/p>\n

\n During an interview with Time <\/em>magazine<\/a>, published online Monday, the filmmaker said some of his recent favorite films were smaller-scale dramas, including Past Lives<\/em>, which he said was \u201csubtle in a beautiful sort of way,\u201d and Aftersun<\/em>, which he called \u201cjust a beautiful film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n And though Nolan admires the beauty of those projects, he noted that he feels a \u201cresponsibility\u201d to continue making blockbuster movies<\/a> with large casts, elaborate sets and big budgets.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,\u201d the Interstellar<\/em> director told the outlet. \u201cI know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Nolan\u2019s latest directorial\u00a0project Oppenheimer<\/em>, which scored 13 Oscar nominations, reportedly got a $100\u202fmillion budget. While that\u2019s still a large amount for a film, it\u2019s definitely smaller than the budget for his 2020 movie Tenet<\/em>, which had a more than $200 million budget. And it\u2019s even more of a difference from the third film in The Dark Knight<\/em> trilogy, which had an estimated $250 million budget.<\/p>\n

\n But the director doesn\u2019t take any of his resources for granted \u2014\u00a0for Oppenheimer<\/em>, he shortened the shoot from 85 days to 57 to free up more of the budget for production designs and location shooting.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe U.S. government gave [the Manhattan Project] $2 billion, three to four years and an Army Corps of Engineers to build the original Los Alamos,\u201d production designer Ruth De Jong previously told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cI had [none of that].\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n The Cillian Murphy-led film, which followed the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, grossed nearly $1\u202fbillion at the box office since it was released in July.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
