\n The head of an NYPD union attacked City Councilman and congressional candidate Ritchie Torres on Twitter<\/a> \u2014 calling him a \u201cfirst class whore\u201d after the lawmaker called for an investigation into a possible police slowdown amid an epidemic of gun violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe[sic] we go America this is what a first class whore looks like RITCHIE TORRES,\u201d Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins tweeted Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cPasses laws to defund police, supports criminals, & now because he\u2019s running for office he blames the police to protect what he voted for. Remember Little Ritchie? Meet LYING RITCHIE.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments came just hours after Torres, a Democratic candidate to replace retiring Rep. Jos\u00e9 Serrano in New York\u2019s 15th congressional district, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams called for an investigation into the potential slowdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe summertime surge in shootings has all but doubled in NYC. Fewer gun arrests, fewer gun cases solved, slower response times to gun violence: are these signs of an [NYPD] <\/span>slowdown?\u201d he tweeted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Torres fired back at the SBA calling it \u201ca bona fide hate group masquerading as a union.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe racism, misogyny, and homophobia of Ed Mullins gives [President Trump] <\/span>a run for his money,\u201d he wrote online.<\/span><\/p>\n

New York City has seen 14 straight weeks in surging gun violence \u2014 with nearly 400 more shootings and more than 500 more victims during the same time last year.<\/p>\n

In August, Gotham saw a 166 percent increase in shootings, despite cops making up ground in gun arrests over the final two weeks, slightly surpassing the total of firearm collars by two.<\/p>\n

At the same time, arrests have plummeted.<\/p>\n

As of Monday, police have made nearly 60,000 fewer arrests so far this year compared to 2019.<\/p>\n

The spike in shootings lines up with the NYPD\u2019s move to disband its controversial plain-clothes anti-crime unit, which was charged with getting guns off the streets.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
