\n Saturday Night Live<\/em> instantly started receiving backlash after Nikki Haley made a surprise app<\/a>earance during the Feb. 3 show.<\/p>\n

\n During a town hall sketch for the cold open, the Republican presidential candidate made a cameo to ask James Austin Johnson\u2019s Donald Trump some questions of her own.<\/p>\n

\n Haley started out by asking, \u201cWhy won\u2019t you debate Nikki Haley?\u201d in reference to the former president refusing to participate in presidential debates ahead of the 2024 election.<\/p>\n

\n Johnson\u2019s Trump responded, \u201cOh my God. It\u2019s her, the woman who was in charge of security on Jan. 6. It\u2019s Nancy Pelosi.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cAre you doing OK, Donald? Haley proceeded to ask. \u201cYou might need a mental competency test.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou know what, I did,\u201d Johnson\u2019s Trump said. \u201cI took the test and I aced it, OK. Perfect score. They said I\u2019m 100 percent mental and, you know, I\u2019m confident because I\u2019m a man. That\u2019s why a woman should never run our economy. Women are terrible with money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Ayo Edebiri later popped up at the end of the sketch and directed a question at Haley: \u201cI was just curious, what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War? And do you think it starts with an S<\/em> and ends with a lavery<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The former South Carolina governor said in response, \u201cYep, I probably should have said that the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Edebiri\u2019s question was in reference to a December 2023 town hall in New Hampshire, where a voter asked Haley what caused the war. She responded at the time, \u201cI think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run, the freedoms and what people could and couldn\u2019t do.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\n People quickly began to criticize Haley<\/a> on social media<\/a> for not mentioning slavery in her response. She ended up walking back her comments during a radio interview on\u00a0Good Morning New Hampshire<\/em>, saying, \u201cOf course, the Civil War was about slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n She continued, \u201cWhat it means to us today is about freedom \u2014 that\u2019s what that was all about. It was about individual freedom,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was about economic freedom. It was about individual rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Following Haley\u2019s appearance on SNL<\/em>, some people took to social media to criticize the NBC sketch comedy show for giving her screen time but not other candidates. <\/p>\n

\n NBC declined to comment, but sources told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that NBC will comply with any equal time obligations for other presidential candidates across both parties.<\/p>\n

\n Edebiri made her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live<\/em> with musical guest Jennifer Lopez.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
