{"id":607556,"date":"2024-02-06T13:00:03","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T10:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/j-dillas-daughters-reflect-on-his-legacy-in-first-joint-interview\/"},"modified":"2024-02-06T13:00:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T10:00:03","slug":"j-dillas-daughters-reflect-on-his-legacy-in-first-joint-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/j-dillas-daughters-reflect-on-his-legacy-in-first-joint-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"#J Dilla&#8217;s Daughters Reflect On His Legacy In First Joint Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">J Dilla has left behind a legacy that changed Hip Hop forever, but he is also survived by a family who continue bringing attention to his contributions.<\/p>\n<p>The producer\u2019s two daughters, Ty-Monae Paige Whitlow and Ja\u2019Mya Yancey, have been featured in a new entry in the Detroit Pistons\u2019\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?app=desktop&amp;list=PLhCGqTf0Gslo1t_SLrVr5_sRivxW_uPUK\"><em>Detroit Creative <\/em>videos series<\/a> that \u201cgo behind the scenes\u201d with local artists.<\/p>\n<p>For Whitlow and Yancey, who were born about a year and a half apart to different mothers, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing toether in a video was notable given the long-running legal complications over Dilla\u2019s estate (some of which were enumerated in this <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stonesthrow.com\/news\/the-battle-for-j-dilla-s-legacy\/\">2009\u00a0<em>VIBE <\/em>article<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Whitlow spoke about what drives artists from Detroit, saying: \u201cAnybody from Detroit, we\u2019re natural-born hustlers. We need to get it, we always on go. As creatives and as individuals, that\u2019s the thing that sets us apart from everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Yancey talked about how her father inspired her. \u201cSeeing his overall work ethic, he put his all into everything,\u201d she said. \u201cThat inspired me to put my all into it, because I never know if this will be the last thing that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yancey said that she was partnering with her former elementary school to pay tribute to J Dilla with an \u201cart exhibit,\u201d whereas her half-sister talked about carrying on her father\u2019s legacy with: \u201cWe\u2019re both people who make an impact in our own ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watch the segment below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"instagram-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C28LmmUPFeA\/embed\" width=\"320\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dan Charnas, author of the 2022 book\u00a0<em>Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm<\/em>, took note of the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve read Dilla Time, you probably understand how momentous this interview is,\u201d he wrote in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C2-K77bLQb2\/?hl=en\">Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s his daughters\u2019 first, together.I think many people forgot he had daughters and maybe some never knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you talk about legacy, this is it. And you get to meet them as poised young adults. Paige is a mother, and Ja\u2019Mya now a registered nurse and graduate of Emory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>J Dilla is set to receive another major tribute later this year. On March 30,\u00a0Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge and the Black Radio Orchestra will celebrate both Dilla and jazz legend Duke Ellington with a one-off show at Concert Hall at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Simone Ecclestone, the organization\u2019s director of Hip Hop culture and contemporary music,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rockthebells.com\/articles\/kennedy-center-duke-ellington-j-dilla\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cWe are so excited to launch our <em>Hip Hop &amp;<\/em> Festival celebrating the deeply interconnected and symbiotic relationship between Hip Hop and Jazz.
