Now, five years on from getting a new kidney, the rap veteran is celebrating life.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote on Instagram alongside pictures of himself in hospital undergoing treatment: \u201cGrateful to God as I celebrate my fifth kidney anniversary! On February 5, 2019, I received the incredible gift of life \u2013 a new kidney. Five years on, I\u2019m still going strong. My battle with kidney failure and dialysis inspired me to launch Freedom Thinkers Academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the company is thriving, empowering and graduating students. Turning adversity into opportunity has been my greatest achievement. If you\u2019re facing renal failure and dialysis, remember, there is hope. Keep your faith in God and stay focused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"instagram-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C2-R98hrxOK\/embed\" width=\"320\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"instagram-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C2_Uu_TL9sw\/embed\" width=\"320\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Freeway has also said that every Monday he will be sharing his experience of kidney failure and dialysis in an Instagram live stream in an attempt to raise awareness about the condition.<\/p>\n<p>The rapper has been an advocate for awareness of kidney failure since his diagnosis almost a decade ago after being initially fearful of revealing his health problems.<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey was like, \u2018Yo, you shouldn\u2019t do this. You shouldn\u2019t say this. We just have to deal with this amongst ourselves,\u2019\u201d Freeway remembered of his team\u2019s advice at the time. \u201cThey said to keep it to myself so I wouldn\u2019t look weak; hide it from people because I\u2019m a celebrity. A lot of people felt like I shouldn\u2019t be so open and letting people know what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA majority of rappers are Black men, especially in the \u201890s and early 2000s, and Black men want it to seem like nothing can affect them, like they\u2019re invincible,\u201d Freeway continued. \u201cNobody wanted to show any weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI felt it was more important for me to spread the knowledge than to portray being invincible. That\u2019s why I wanted to get in front of it, because it affects African Americans.
